I love this game, and have been looking forward to it for some time. The visual style and craftsmanship that this must have taken to pull it all off is incredible. It wears its inspiration on its sleeve and gets as close to a BLAME! game as it can get, and a souls-like to boot. I love the weapons, the armor, and the enemies, but more importantly the world. The map is simply incredible to gawk at, and I feel like i'm taking screenshots more than i'm actually playing.

I will not lie, there are problems with the game, most of which are being discussed extensively. Some are not unreasonable criticisms though I do believe some should temper their expectations a bit. I have a pretty large tolerance to jank and can understand a lot of it is due to the small team. I also think it will be tweaked and fixed in due time. This is a labor of love and absolutely deserves support and a purchase. My biggest issue however which I genuinely hope gets updated is:

Light Attacks

A big staple of dark souls games are the sense of control you have in the actual beat-to-beat combat encounters. I'm not saying you need to be exactly like a souls game, but this game is SO CLOSE to getting something special like that. For some reason the light attacks appear to switch animations every time you attack seemingly at random. Sometimes its an overhead swing, sometimes an underhand swing and sometimes it's a thrust (I use the spear-sword looking weapons and have not experimented with others much yet so might update this review if I find it to be different with other weapons). You can never predict what attack your weapon will do when initiating a light attack and that makes a huge difference when you might be expecting the timing of one attack over the other. I have tried to understand what makes them change. Running? Holding a different movement key? ANYTHING?? I understand how heavy attacks work and that comes out the same every time, all i'm asking for is consistency with light attack chains so I can properly plan my fights instead of hoping the attack I want to happen will happen.


Edit: The light attacks issue has been resolved, at least for the weapon class of my choice. Thank you!

Overall, this is absolutely worth playing and it is commendable what just three people were able to accomplish.

A masterfully written and performed piece of art. Every ounce of atmosphere and emotion is gut-wrenching. Anxiety and beauty practically ooze from the seams. Characters burst with love, the environment beckons your presence.

I emplore you play this if you struggle with anxieties of our age. You'll hold your loved ones tighter after this, I guarantee it.

Plus the bike is super fun.

A very creative and experimental traversal sandbox. Probably could have done with more meat on the bones but I adored the surreal nature of the setting. Also probably the fastest I have ever "completed" a game.

This is a really fun game. It looks great, runs great and even works on steam deck. Worth the absurdly low price.

Probably the best and worst game I have ever played. Fantastic writing and fun setting gimped by terrible gameplay and a horrible latter half. The source engine really ruins this game, and I love source engine games.

A fun spin on the HL2 formula with interesting art style and characters. Runtime is perfect, however a cliffhanger ending like this is not exactly satisfying. Worth checking out if you enjoy a slower-paced shooter.

First things first, this "mod" is fantastic, and should be played by any fan of Half Life 2 and the episodes. There is no reason to read any more reviews, simply play it and enjoy this wondrous romp through the arctic. Calling it a mod feels cheap, because the bar for quality is so high that it would be a bit of an insult to call it so.

Now, I feel the need to explicitly state how AWESOME this was, and how much fun I had playing it. I hardly ever sit down to play a game for a bit and come out on the other end without so much as a break in between. This kept me engaged from minute one all the way until the end. I played this for six uninterrupted hours and very little left me wanting.

The mapping is some of the best I have ever seen and is all cohesive and exciting. The levels are on par with and in my opinion sometimes surpass the quality even the mainline titles have. It is simply excellent and they should be so proud of what they have created.

The enemies, are simply fantastic. There are so many different kinds, races, variants and familiar creatures that I felt simply delighted to turn the corner and see them staring back at me. The weapons are also extremely punchy and have even stepped up a level from MMODs already fantastic animations.

If you're still on this fence, this game has the Half Life equivalent to Halo 1's magnum as the default pistol, so go ahead and install now.

Please, play this game.

My only complaint lies in the companion. Perhaps others won't mind it so much, but I lost the companion unknowingly. Perhaps I missed an audio cue or other reminder but I had left Wilson on the top of the APC at some point thinking there would be more driving bits but I never made it back to him, and I feel like I had missed a lot of dialog and a side-quest in doing so and my save didn't go back far enough for me to undo this. I plan on replaying this game with my brother and dad at some point so I will keep it in mind for my next play-through. You might just want to carry him with you if you ever need to get out of the APC.
