I hope you have an Office 365 subscription, because get ready to spend 75% of your 600 hour playtime in Microsoft Excel.

When a game can demand this and yet maintain overwhelmingly positive reviews I think that speaks for itself.

I got on board with this game during its Early Access period. I remember seeing it initially shown off at the VGA and thinking at the time it looked too good to be true.

How wrong I was. This game manages to blend together a myriad of satisfying qualities that keep me playing it over and over and over again. It has a strong satirical premise that entertains from the get go. Aside from the firmly accepted satisfaction that destruction brings, the gameplay allows you to interact, manipulate and conflagrate parts of the ships in a delightfully rewarding manner. Even when things go wrong and you accidentally trigger a reactor explosion, you're treated to a deeply satisfying audio-visual experience that at the least provides some compensation for the otherwise complete failure.

To top all of that off, the gameplay experience presents as an increasingly challenging puzzle game to which you can approach in any number of ways. There is a fairly clear path that the game pushes you towards, but I found that over time I was able to discover (often by accident) creative ways to be more efficient in scrapping the different classes of ships the game has to offer. As you play the game you come to realise which parts can be sacrificed in order to greatly speed up the process of scrapping max value, and one of the personal goals often set for myself is to try to hit the 95% mark for any given ship in a single shift, or failing that, two shifts.

All of that is to say that, now that the game is in full release and you can enjoy the full campaign experience without risk of future progress resets, I could not recommend this game enough.

Lucas Pope never disappoints with his unique approach to games. Obra Dinn is the sort of game you would get if you combined Cluedo (or Clue?) with Her Story. Similar to Cluedo you are tasked with figuring out who did what to who where and with what weapon - only there are 60 victims to investigate and you also need to identify them - something the game rarely makes an easy job.

Once you find a person's remains, you are aided in this task by being able to hear the last moments before they died and then are able to navigate a frozen-in-time portrait of their moment of death. This is the element that reminds me of Her Story - they are small segments of the story which you will encounter out of order, and have to try to piece things together logically from them.

You find yourself revisiting these snapshots over and over again, looking at the characters in the background to try to figure out if their position or activity int he scene can help you to identify who they are by their role.

Many of the crew cannot be explicitly identified or accounted for from in these memories and so you are required to employ a certain amount of logical deduction.

I first played this in its tech demo form - at that time only the first 3 fates were really identifiable.

Since that demo, several features/tools were added for the player to make investigation easier - but, rather than take away from the experience, these serve to enhance the immersion of the game. These come in the form of two sketches depicting the crew and passengers on board the ship (unnamed until you name them) and the chapters of the book. These tools aid the player by providing organisational support and is handled in a way which brings you further into the world and the setting, rather than simply gamefying it.

Let me preface my recommendation with this: This game in its current state is recommended for enfranchised players of the Warhammer series. At this time I wouldn’t recommend it for newer players or even historical players who have jot played the previous two games. I’ll also preface that at this point I have just completed the tutorial campaign and I am 20 turns into a Demon Prince campaign, so I won’t talk about anything beyond that scope.

Geforce RTX 3070
Ryzen 5 5600x 3.4ghz
8GB DDR4 RAM
I play at 1440p on a curved monitor.

The good: The game contains a number of important quality of life improvements from the last game. Aside from the well discussed battle and campaign features that have solved problems we both knew we had and some which we didn’t know we had until they fixed them, CA have clearly learned the importance of having each faction be mechanically unique.

Further, the tutorial campaign is exceptionally good, both as a narrative and an onboarding experience.

I’ve seen a lot of people criticising graphics. For me, graphically, the game is an improvement from Warhammer particularly in unit detail and effects. I made a point to have a close look at WoC units to compare. I understand that some people criticise the change in visual style on the campaign map, with some finding it to be an overly simplified look. This is not a technical issue therefore, it is an artistic question. I personally prefer this style - perhaps it is playing on a higher resolution screen, but I am finding the campaign world a lot more immersive - in the previous games the campaign map was very homogenous per each region - whereas within one specific region in this game local areas feel a lot more diverse.

The bad:

For all the positive qol changes, sadly there are some things which have actually led to a quality of life decrease. Of particular note are the unit placement highlights and orders, which on the white snow background seem to be almost invisible. I find this extremely surprising that this has not been addressed before release. Unit order legibility is honestly one of the most important parts of managing battles so I sincerely hope they do something to make them stand out against the snow, which is a very common sight in this game.

There are issues currently with running the game at 1440p and if you try to run it windowed you will find the top of the screen cut off - there is no screen safe space adjustment option so your only choice is to run full screen. I hope these issues will be addressed post haste.

Conclusion:

As stated in my preface, this review is based on a small time playing. Overall the issues I have faced have not been massively impactful and I am enjoying the game immensely. Still I hope these issues are addressed as soon as possible.

An excellent entry from the MK franchise.

Though dogged by a confusion at, and in the run up to the launch of the game, the game runs well, plays well and feels totally worth it.

Unlike MK9, I was able to find a character to specialise with early and have since become better with him than with any of the characters in MK9. It is very easy to practice and learn to be better on MKX, and mehtadological playstyles are easier to hone than before.

Besides that the story is greatly improved from MK9, the kombat is far smoother, and it the gameplay experience allround is better than ever, while the new improvements are welcomed.

The game itself feels like a very nice blend between MK9 and Injustice: Gods Among us, borrowing the best bits of both games.

Many game sequels do little to improve on previous games. This is not an example of this.

Would recommend.

This game broke two trends for me, though one was cased by the other: Firstly this marked the first Assassin's Creed game which I wasn't particularly anticipating and did not preorder, and this was the first Assassin's Creed game which I bought on PC before console. However it must be said, I think that this is the best game so far.

This game is complicated. However if you are able to stick with it for just a little time, your efforts will be rewarded with the most thrilling, intuitive, intricate, intriguing and enjoyable grand stratergy video game ever to have graced the earth. The ecosystemic style of family relations and cultural societies together with the sheer unexhausting comprehension this game achieves makes it a surprisingly addictive experience. The multiplayer feature may also be annoying to set up but it easily doubles the fun to be had on the single player game. This is probably the best purchase I have ever made.
