The gameplay of unboxing crates and cases is very engaging but the first person shooter side content is cool too i guess

To start it off, this game was very beautiful and touching. I had not played the game on the original consoles as it came out, but decided to give it a try after waiting some time and hearing that it supposedly is in a much more playable state in comparison to what it was when the port as just released on steam.

Performance & Bugs

I purchased and played this game somewhere around the 25th-30th of june this year. I held off on purchasing and trying out the game due to the backlash of poor optimization, bugs and performance. With an RTX 4090 and an AMD Ryzen 7900X3D, the game ran just fine in 1080p with all graphics set to ultra/maximum settings. I did not look at my framerate statistics for the game, but I would assume it ran between 50-200 fps on average, but at most times being somewhere around 60-100. I did get random drops at times, but it was certainly playable performance-wise even despite all the minor drops every now and then. The bugs I experienced occured only on very few occasions, with some of them being very minor by being very miniscule visual/cosmetic bugs with others being very major, such as camera intensively shaking to the point that everything in my view breaks for no reason following up with the game crashing. I however don't think these were a major turn-off because of how rarely they occured. My game crashed only once and i've had to restart the game only once or twice due to visual bugs affecting the gameplay too majorly.

The story

You mainly play as Joel, a former father who lives in a post-apocalyptic world infested with people infected with a zombie-like fungus virus. 20 years after the outbreak begun you are tasked with smuggling a girl to a resistance group with no prior knowledge as to why the girl needs to be smuggled. Not too long into the game, you figure out the possible reason as to why the girl is so important to the character who tasked you with smuggling her. As you progress through the story, you meet and encounter new people, some with good intentions and some with not-so good intentions. As you encounter new people, you get to hear and see how they view life and the people infected by the fungi. You also see what keeps people motivated to keep going even when the world seems to be cruel with the merciless infected roaming all around the world. For some people, keeping people close to them safe is what motivates them, meanwhile others are motivated by simply just surviving and getting to live another way. The game lets you see the world through many other eyes besides for just Joel's, which I find very enjoyable.

Gameplay

And as you encounter either people infected by the fungi or people with bad intentions, you defend yourself with the game's combat system. You use different kinds of weapons and tools you find along your journey to fight. The combat system is excellent in my opinion, with very minimal flaws and a somewhat realistic feeling to it, with most enemies taking no more than 2 bullets to be killed if aimed into the right spots. As you (very inevitably will) take damage, you will also be able to heal yourself with bandaging. Magically being able to endure more trauma or bullets by just wrapping some bandages around you does break the immersion a little, but I can't help but be grateful that a healing system is in the game.

While exploring the environment of different places that you travel in, you will usually find different materials that will come to benefit in the crafting system. The crafting system allows you to create things such as bandages, bombs or more upgraded melee weapons. You can also find special crafting parts that you can use to upgrade your weapons to make them even better than what they already were to boost your combat capabilities, like by increasing bullet pierce, reducing recoil or increasing ammo capability. It's a very innovative way to reward the player for carefully looking through different places of the map.

As you explore through more areas, you are also given the opportunity to sneak around some enemies or sneak behind your enemies to silently kill them without using weapons. Some enemies can simply be choked out silently, meanwhile some enemies, like the game's "clickers" require you to use a shiv, an object you can craft, to kill them painlessly and quickly. I personally did not like to use my shivs against any enemies where it was needed to in order to sneak kill them, as the shiv has a much better use, which is to unlock locked doors that contain lots of ammo, resources and loot. The sneaking system feels very clearly encouraged at times, but at the same time discouraged when killing even just one enemy with a shiv immediately breaks it. Most of the time it's just better to shoot the clickers rather than waste a shiv you could use to get much more resources than the resources you'd save by using a shiv instead of bullets.

Conclusion

Overall, the game is just about excellent in every way. I would DEFINITELY recommend this for just about anyone, even those who have not played many or any video games in the past. Despite some minor (and just a few not so minor) hiccups, the game worked fine for me and I had lots of fun exploring different areas looking for loot to help me progress through my journey easier. The story and cutscenes were well made and written, with the acting and visuals being very touching and beautiful. I will most certainly replay the game again to look for any possible things that I might've missed on my very first playthrough. The story and game leaves you feeling conflicted about your morals one or few times, but that's precisely what I enjoy about the game, as it gives you opportunities to just think. By far this has to be one of my favorite games of the year and I am very glad I gave it a chance. I hope the sequel will be ported to Steam soon and will be just as good as the first game despite the negative feedback that i've heard of it.

genuinely one of the best games i have ever played and a great game to start the series off with

you may miss some references to the future games if this is your first game but undeniably its the best to start with the game that's meant to be the "0th" installment

the shifting from seriousness to comedy is absolutely wonderful and i love it

i highly recommend this to anyone who has played fighting games before and to even those who havent

runs well on almost maximized graphics on old hardware

i would give the game a rating of 9.5/10
