Early Access Review
Well, I gotta say there isn't a lot of positive stuff here to say. I like the core gameplay of Robocraft but everything else around it is dull, patronizing, or worse trying to claw at my pocket book to the point what I do like about it is cheapened enough to not make me want to play. I will give you a quick overview of each problem I have, then details on what happened. Please note these thoughts are coming from an older woman who is just getting back into video games, so my opinion might not matter as much as I do not think this game is targeted at people like myself.

The tutorial
On the quick:
-Not very useful
-Teaches the player things that are learned within the first minute of game play
-Does not teach from the ground up
-Uses premade assets (bot almost finished)
-Does not give me information about WHY I should build the way it wants me to
-Does not let you keep the blocks used to make the robot.
-Crate it gives you for it doesn't give you the back row of items, it is insulting
-Constantly flashes "Well done. Nice job" at you, extremely patronizing
-Treats you like a small child

Overall I have nothing positive to say about the tutorial, I don't even like how the items it gave me was presented. It made me feel like the game thinks me a small child, as if I cannot figure out the most basic of functions and gameplay. It doesn't teach me anything particularly useful nor does it reward you proper.
Look at how rude this is, giving me a crate and keeping half of it locked:

What happened during the tutorial
When I went into the tutorial it prompted me to do some extremely basic things, things like place a leg on the bot then place six cubes to finish the bot's arm. My biggest problem with this is how I already know all of this, I have figured this stuff out within the very first minute of gameplay when I started it up so perhaps it is mildly useful to someone who hasn't played at all? It seems like someone would normally do exactly as I did and simply mess around with the blocks and make something (I started playing a few days before the update). This tutorial does not teach me how to build a robot from the ground up, it doesn't even let me keep the blocks used in the tutorial. To make matters worse it is amazing patronizing flashing "Well done. Nice job" over and over like I am a small child needing to be complemented for every action I take. Finally you take this bot and are thrust into a small training mode that lasts about 20 seconds, the game tells you how to move and shoot, all in text boxes like before while building, then tells you to blow up a rather impressive looking robot covered in cosmetics.

New AI maches
On the quick:
-Much higher difficult than player vs player matches
-Much less rewarding than player vs player matches (1 item vs 3)
-Takes just as long as player vs player matches
-You will fight better robots than your own mostly
-Is worthless to all degrees given you must:
A) have a constant internet connection and cannot play offline
B) Have an easier time playing against players anyway

Again, nothing positive to say.

Now I’ve only recently started playing, only with three days and a slight handful of hours under my belt. That being said I think I’ve been doing pretty good, have some matches:

I think I’m doing pretty well for myself. That being said the AI match I played was significantly harder than those I have been playing against players. Normally my matches are complete dominations with the enemy team barely scoring a few points. This AI match however was a lot closer and took A LOT more effort out of me, and for what? This:

Really? Just this? I am rewarded with a single item? I fought several bots built better than my own that all aim better than I do, struggling in a match that takes just as long as one vs players and I only get 1/3rd the reward? Why have this at all? I believe the developers of this game have taken a massive misstep in creating these AI matches, they are entirely worthless to me as I cannot play them while offline because Robocraft requires a constant connection to the Internet and they reward me less for more work.

The crates and getting more items, my personal experience

Pros:
-Fun for those who like the rush of the gamble
-Although random, it is possible to get nice things very quickly
-Fun for those who like surprises?
-Gives me cosmetic items (I got a flag a few times) other mobile games won’t give free cosmetics

Cons:
-Does not properly feel rewarding
-Locked item row is constantly trying my patience, psychological warfare
-Does not give me blocks proper (struggle to make robots)
-Due to items selling for very small amounts getting anything without pulling it from a crate is hard
-Even getting the best crate does not grant very nice things (I have gotten many purple crates but only one purple item, is this normal?)
-I do not know what to do with almost every block I get save for normal blocks/smgs
-I personally am not a fan of gambling
-Without premium they are not fun almost at all.

I do not have much good to say about getting crates. What little I have to say that’s good doesn’t even apply to me personally but I wanted to put SOMETHING positive down. The only real good thing I can see in crates is getting really big fun items randomly without much work. So far I have struggled to make basic robots, I do not get almost any cubes, the basic foundation of robots and have to sell weapons which do not give enough cubes. A basic SMG sells for 80, that’s only eight blocks. If blocks cost 1 instead of 10 this would not be a problem ever. Blocks that do things (like guns) do not sell for enough for me to get just simple blocks; this means later on in the game when I want to get other blocks that do stuff, such as guns, legs, or even this new mini-gun it's going to take an increasingly long amount of time. Unless you get more items as you level up? I do not know if it gets better.

The other big problem I see is the constant psychological pressure to get me to spend money. I did not see it at first when I had the free 3 days of premium, but now that my premium time has run out every match feels stressful at the end, even if I did well because I know I’m going to miss out on a bunch of items that my near empty bank of items desperately needs.

Simply put, the game is not fun without premium, at least for me. I struggle to get enough blocks, I struggle to get weapons, and I struggle to get movement items. I simply do not get to make any robots save for tearing apart the basic ones I started with and reconfiguring it over and over. This is not fun, from my perspective. Getting a crate for the match, losing half your items, losing half the rarity of that crate for losing the match; this all stacks way too much unfun punishment on the player. The sheer punishment levels here are astounding.

My most important thought on crates:

I am more than willing to spend money in a video game, even a free video game if that video game makes me feel like spending money is a nice way to support the people who make it while adding to the fun. I feel like I am being held hostage by the premium system and what was fun for three days has become a chore. I have started playing games again because I have a lot of free time now, and my son has always loved these things and I use to back in the day as well. I truly hope this constant barrage on my will of “YOU NEED TO SPEND MONEY”, does not follow me to other free to play games.

I bought this eight years ago, I didn't finish it. I kinda' didn't get it. I don't really get video games either.
