The Story of Inu.

Chapter One.

Inu started out as a wanderer with little cash. All he has was an iron rod for a weapon, some pants, and 1,000 Cats (currency). He started in a desolate town call ‘The Hub’ which was obviously only a decrepit shadow of what it once was. Many of the buildings we just derelict ruins, once houses I suppose. All that was left standing was a bar, and a thieves academy. There wasn’t much for him here, so he headed off, in a random direction, out into the vast desert.

The next town he came across was in much better condition than the one he left. There was as quad of guards standing by the town gates, and they warned him he’d better be quick with his business. They called him a ‘Flatskin’ in reference to the fact he was human, and not a Shek like them. Shek’s are humanoid, but they have horns growing out their face. They are a proud warrior race, and they don’t like many other races much. Inu entered the town and heeded their warning. He went straight into an armour shop and bought a leather jacket to cover is upper body. It offered little protection, but it was certainly better than nothing. Next he went to a sword shop and bought probably the cheapest, half rusted iron sword he could see. His next move was to see if he could find a travelling companion in the local bar.

The bar was half full of mercenaries, guards, and some other town-folk. Inu asked around and found that most people wanted a large sum of money to travel with him. Others simply did not want to even talk to him because he was human (The town was a Shek settlement). As he began to lose hope, the last person he asked decided she didn’t even want a sum of money, as long as he could get her out of this town and fighting. Her name was Ruka; She was Shek, but had had her horns cut off. A tradition amongst the Shek if they are believed to have retreated from battle. She explained why they were severed off as a misunderstanding. She was in a battle as a soldier for the Shek army, when she was knocked out and left for dead. After the battle, she awoke and returned to her camp. No one there believed her story, and she was punished for betrayal. Inu did not really care if she was lying or not, he just didn’t want to go against the harsh world on his own. The pair stocked up on goods from the grocery trader and headed out into the world.

It didn’t take long for them to come across another settlement. This was hardly worth calling a town; more like a pit-stop along a highway. There was a small store, and a bar, that’s all. They bought some cheap dried meat from a local, and continued their journey. After travelling for a few kilometers, they came across a Shek fortress. It was built upon a steep mountain, but it wasn’t very high. It plateaued out about 100 meters above the ground. They walked up the ramp towards the gate where there were many guards standing duty. The pair passed through without trouble and found that the ‘fortress’ was little more than the town Inu started his journey in. There were many crumbling ruins, and few standing buildings. The one they headed to was a small tower at the rear of the fortification.

Ruka (being Shek, she probably would have a better standing with anyone in their army) entered and talked to the officer inside. She asked if there were any bounty available to take on. She was swiftly told that if there was, she should check to poster board and come back when she’d actually collected one. Without saying anything else to the officer she left the building and started leaving with Inu.

It did not take long before they found themselves in trouble though. About 200 meters outside the gates of the ‘fortress’, they were set upon by a pack of wolves. There was about 8 of them, so there was no chance they’d survive the attack. They instantly ran back towards the fortress in hopes the guards would help fend off the wild pack. Inu was bitten on the leg and had to limp most of the way back, just out of reach of the wolves fangs.
As they approached the gates, the guards rushed forwards and attacked the wolves. Inu bandaged up his leg and began skinning the wolves corpses. Once he felt fully healed, they set off again, but trouble always seems to find them in these parts of the world…

Once again, they were only about 200 meters away from the ‘fortress’, when a patrolling Shek soldier decided to call out to Inu ‘Hey Flatskin, you’re not wanted here!’
Inu and Ruka kept running, in the hopes that the soldier wouldn’t chase them, but they were wrong. The soldier sprinted upto Inu and swung his sword at him. This was enough to make the pair stop and turn to fight him. The soldier was very skilled with his sword and gave many brutal blows to Inu. Ruka, being a trained soldier in the Shek army herself, was also very skilled with her heavy two handed greatsword, and had dealt many wounding blows to the soldier. As Inu’s health diminished, and the thought of wounding or killing a Shek soldier so close to a fortress with a barracks full of more soldiers wieghed in on them, they thought it was best to try and flee the battle before things became too serious. They turned to run, and instantly faced a squad of Shek soldiers who had probably seen the fight from afar and had come to aid the fight with their brother in arms. Greatly outnumbered, but with nowhere to run, they decided to fight to their death.

Inu was the first to be knocked down, and his leg was severed. Ruka put up a fierce fight against about eight foes. She was eventually knocked out and left to die. The squad, obviously happy enough with the fight, didn’t even check to see if their enemy was actually dead, or loot them. Ruka soon woke up, but played dead until the squad was out of sight. She stood up and realized that in the melee her right arm had been broken. She hobbled over to Inu to bandage his severe wounds. His leg was rolling around on the ground in the fierce dust storm that had started after their battle; there was no chance she was going to recover that. As she approached him, he woke up and rolled onto his stomach. She began bandaging him, but he soon stopped her claiming he’d be alright. She knew he was very much dying, but so did he. He didn’t want her to waste good bandaging on a dying man. Inu soon fell unconscious again, and Ruka began bandaging him again. Once she had done all she could to save him, she began bandaging herself. It was fortunate they they had stocked up in the town where Inu had met her.

Almost as if by miracle, a traveling caravan approached them. They had many medical wares, including prosthetic limbs! Ruka traded the skins from the wolves, and bought a limb for Inu with the cats she’d made. She had no idea how to attach it, but she was determined to find someone who could. She lifted Inu over her shoulder, and started walking through the night to hopefully find a town where someone knew how to attach a limb.
