Played Jan 2nd 2025, had to check files once before it would let me play but the game does indeed work. Ran pedestrians over for a half an hour and had a blast laughing at the ridiculous scene playing out. Got to wag my finger at my partner while driving, taking my eyes off the road intentionally to crash while giving my VR friend a stern talking to. Still loads of fun.

Final Fantasy Tactics fan here, this game is dreadfully boring.

It's like someone said let's make a game out of the FFT beginner units and mages can only target one unit... and if there are any targets between the caster and the destination it will detonate on them instead of the intended target. So it's like having a cloth user that basically does the same thing as archers but it has to occasionally wait a turn to get MP where an archer doesn't.

That's not to say the game is shallow- there are weapon skills that can be used by any class that use MP and you get one every 10 levels. There is a crafting system where you'll be looking back and forth between the copious menus comparing stats until you outfit everyone with +1 of the current generation of gear. There are branching paths to the story that you can explore, once you beat the game you can pick up the game at any of the many points provided in the 4 chapters. There are monster units that you can invite to your party and unique NPCs with special jobs you can acquire as well.

But like I said earlier... boring. People will say this granddaddy of tactical role playing is the quintessential masterpiece of the genre. "The strategy found in this game is unmatched." Yeah nothing like standing around at one side of the map as the enemy army approaches throwing rocks into bushes in hopes of finding one of the 4 buffs that eventually litter the battlefield. Or perhaps it's the number of units you can use in battle, 12 instead of 5. No, in my opinion having more units taking more turns doesn't make this any more engaging.

I suppose they just appreciate the bland "fairness" of each battle. Nothing flashy or extreme. Probably similar to how I can't enjoy games like Call of Duty because I've experienced older games with dynamic 3rd/1st person view not balanced around arcade-y respawn unblemished by knifing and game unbalancing kill streaks and level ups. True tactical squad based action as opposed to headless chicken battles with obscenity screaming 12 year olds. But I digress.

There is light at the end of the tunnel. I'm 170 hours in and I've just finished the main story for the first time. That's probably quite a generous amount of time to complete it, but I didn't exploit the goth trick so I did a fair bit of money grinding. After you beat the game there is level sync for any new battles and you get to use late game skills and your late game party as you progress back through the other storyline paths.

It's wonderful, the mages can not only cast in cross patterns and hit multiple units, but they can cast large area of effect spells 2 spaces away from center now too, completely breaking the game, and in my opinion making the game more enjoyable. I speak too much heresy I can hear the townsfolk picking up their torches and pitchforks. I still think this game is more similar to the game boy advance FFT titles, and for the record I like those games too.

I'm looking forward to playing the paths with my now OP group and I hear there is extensive post game content that rivals the length of the main game itself so I'm hyped to play another couple hundred hours in this game. It's just a shame that many of the likable aspects come at the end of the game.

I'm not saying fans of Final Fantasy Tactics wont like this game, but they should know what they're getting into before buying. It's long, repetitive, many of the character classes don't feel unique. The game doesn't really evolve into something more interesting until late/post game and I'm afraid that will turn many people away from ever finishing it. But if you're in for the long haul with plenty of time on your hands and you enjoy tactics games I'm sure you can find your way into liking this one.

It's been a long time since I've played the story so I wont bother explaining that.

This game's online mode involves finding a genie. Once you find them they grant you all the freestuffz you could ever desire. The polite simps will tell you how great they are, even if they say it literally at gunpoint so they don't get kicked offline. So yeah, the game is over at that point... then you just live perpetually cruising around, being bad at the game, and posting squares in the chat.

There's heists, good luck getting the braindead to actually play the game though. If you like loading screens jump right into this right here! Once you do get some UbEr MeTaGaMeRs to do them for you you'll have no idea what's going on because they don't follow the script, don't speak your language, and are going for that arbitrary helicopter spawn instead of the yellow marker. SO MUCH FUN!

The freemode is cool. It's filled with hostile people who speak manditory ebonics you know... As you do. There are events that you can start up that prevent everyone else from starting their own events so people with nothing to do will hop on flying motorcycles, cars, and jets to prevent you from seeing anything other than loading screens. If you try to do a "sell" mission where you have saved up loot for hours doing mini events, someone can take your 800k cargo and turn it into a 5k profit for themselves with one missile. Eventually you just play in a solo lobby and begin to question why you even play the game.

Highly recommend this experience. Because I want you to feel my pain.

I bought this a while ago and slept on it and regret it. It's fantastic provided you don't play solo. It's that classic 2d game play from yesteryear combined with a play-your-way style. They're handing out Borderlands 3 for free at the moment and we rather play Streets of Rogue in this household.

I've binge gamed this specimen of a "game" for a while now and I can definitively recommend against others playing it.

This game is not hand holding at all, in fact the game insists you figure out how to do things in a trial and error way, as if you were an early primate working out the wonders of the world for yourself. That is unless you wiki that aspect out of the game like a first timer playing minecraft.

This game is tedious. You may want to go ahead and unlock all the "skills" in the "skill tree" first thing as I did only to have your knuckles wrapped when you progress your lineage to the next generation only to find all of your skills are now missing. To keep your abilities you must assign points based on the number children your hominids have before progressing to the next generation. A whole new level of tedium arises when you consider the sheer amount of things to learn in the game. Not only that, but you can learn through mutations that only come from a random chance during birth that you need to see through to death to make permanent. So late game when the only neurons left to fire up are the ones that need to be mutated you'll find yourself spawning hominids just to swiftly send them to their deaths in your efforts to create the super hominid of your dreams. INCREDIBLY BORING.

Otherwise the game is pretty, you get to play as a band of monkey-like creatures intimidating anything that comes near, because the fighting is unintuitive and boring anyway. Like press x to not die, or rather hold it and release after the chime, gets boring fast. It's neat to see your hominid brutally shove pointy sticks into the still-living eye sockets of your enemies only so many times.

But yeah, survival, with ape like creatures, "real to life" tedium of evolving one aspect at a time over years, and it will feel like years, to get one upgrade that you likely wont notice while playing anyway, doesn't make for a great game. If you do pick it up despite this warning, don't expect to love this. People who play this game likely play simulation games, for the mind numbing, repetitive, grindy, brain-shutting-off, time killing nature of it.

Some people may like it, but I doubt many will.

In spite of all this, I'm going to finish it, pray for me.
