On August 4th, mine and Obama's birthday, a friend of mine gifted me this game. They really wanted me to play it. I heaved a deep sigh and reluctantly tried it out. I'm more of an FPS/RPG person myself and added it the enormous shelf of dusty, gifted games sitting atop my 100+ library, assuming that it would share a similar fate.

3 months later, and 370 hours in, it's obvious even to my passing acquaintances that I've sold my soul to the devil so I can sate my lusts on endless, looped, infinitely variable gameplay that insists I go all the way to the end, but is so interesting that I can never bring myself to actually ship my colonists to the stars.

My wife passes by, looking into my dead, bloodshot eyes, nervously smiling and asking if I'm ever going to take another shower again. We haven't had sex since August, and we probably won't anytime soon. The phone calls and texts of concerned friends have gone unanswered. After ignoring his eighth invitation to family dinner, my father has struck my name from the family will and I barely noticed. I didn't really want his library of computer guides from the 1980's anyway, so I don't see what the big deal is.

Bottom line- I've created my own personal hell that I know deep down I will never escape, and part of me doesn't even want to. This is Rimworld. This is my life now. I began my birthday playing this game, and I'll be playing game the day I die. Someone please send help.

This game tries incredibly hard to be not fun and succeeds spectacularly in every conceivable way.

2024 update

As of today, I have to change my review to not recommended. I still love this game. I have so many fun memories playing this with great friends. But lately I've been planning an exit strategy for my community. It's been five years of the highest highs and the lowest lows. The game is currently hitting one of the lowest points I've ever personally witnessed. People are leaving in droves for a wide variety of reasons. And I'm sad to say they're all pretty well justified this time (there have been many mass-exoduses over the years).

As someone who's recently become much more familiar with the process of developing a game, I think it would be wise to withhold judgment on why the game is in the state its currently in until one is in possession of all the relevant facts, and if those relevant facts are never in your possession, maybe it would be best not to speculate.

That being said, if the trajectory of this game doesn't change, and change soon, everyone logging in is going to be taking big bites of the nothing-burger Planetside is becoming. A game that promised something monumental, got halfway there and gave up when it couldn't fully deliver. Barring some major updates, Planetside 2 has about two years of a really good playerbase left on the two servers that hold the numbers necessary for the game to almost function as intended.

"There is no game like this game anywhere else."
That is so true. For now. It's the only reason the IP persists. So get in there if you want to briefly experience how insane this game is still capable of being, despite itself, and stick around if you really love it. But mentally brace yourself for the myriad problems it has and the high degree of likelihood that those problems will never be addressed due to the absence of short-term financial gains their solving presents.
