I never really grew up on the older Nintendo systems- my first console was the N64, so by that point games of this aesthetic were mostly phased out (or exclusive to the GBC). That being said, there is so much dedication to making this game feel era-appropriate. The attention to detail, while also remaining conceptually true to the limitations of that era shows a serious understanding of the era, and of the genre they were trying to work in- I want to draw special attention to a certain level near the end with the rain. I've always loved levels that take place in rain, and aesthetically it was so good.

I'm not that great at Shmups (Despite being a long-time Touhou fan), but I've always enjoyed the genre. Despite being pretty mediocre at them, this game felt engaging, fun, and difficult in all the right ways. No stage felt too long, and the versatility of the weapons that LANCER TWO can equip easily gives this game so much replayability.

The music was also on point and I found myself vibing to a lot of the tracks- especially the ones that came in later on. There's not a whole lot I can say about the music aside from it being really good, and that I would probably add it to my media player playlist if the OST existed.

Finally, the story and writing. It's simple, but very effective. It tells just enough to fill the player in on the current setting, as well as throwing in bits and pieces here and there to whet the player's appetite for lore- what is the INCIDENT, or why does LANCER TWO hate LANCER ONE? Despite being a short game, you're given a good amount of information. The developer definitely knows how to weave a compelling, albeit short, narrative, that keeps the player interested.

I do wholeheartedly look forward to future games this studio makes- I believe they have a strong potential for game design, and given enough time they could make something mind blowing, I'm almost certain of it. If anything, I hope we get a sequel to ASTROLANCER that gives us more insight into the lore of the setting!

Also please give the rabbots wings. They deserve them!

meanwhile the thirst-levels in this game left me dehydrated and in the middle of a desert with no water source nearby
