This game can be hard. Like... unfairly, punishingly hard. You will experience loss that will set you back a couple hours and then some. The heroes come in by the caravan load and many enter the dungeons never to return. There are some nasty surprises in store in the early game, and nastier still in the late game that will have you pulling your hair out. RNG-sus will drive your party to madness and mutilate them one by one. It's hard.

You can get good, though. Your growing roster of varied heroes will improve in skill and through careful management of their afflictions and quirks. Trinkets and baubles in careful measure will pull the party through the tightest situations. Your decisions in supplying the party will make or break each foray into the darkest dungeons, and you will learn to mitigate the losses.

Holy shoot, it looks good. All the grisly beasts, fungal growths, bloodthirsty marauders, shadowy shamblers, and spooky scary skeletons are illustrated and animated just right in a sharp comic book style that just oozes with that eldritch charm one might seek out on the brink of madness. Our heroes look just as good whether they're losing their minds or experiencing a sudden pulse of courage, and in your respective rage or relief you'll feel those swings personally. The level design visually fits right in, against the backdrop of a rundown hamlet to serve as your upgrade-able base camp, as your parties delve into a handful of impressively oppressive areas, all beautifully rendered, each with their own slew of specialized hordes.

Story's got some good spook to it. Check out the trailers for a taste, though I would have liked to see some more storied animation within the game, it's still a great tale, mostly delivered through our ancestor's narration during the occasional loading screen.

In conclusion: It's hard. You might have a bad time. Play it.

Recently got this and gave it a solid playthrough. It was a great experience!

The visuals are pretty neat, with a few cool locations and a handful of weird recurring characters to meet. The soundtrack and general ambience is great, definitely some interesting picks there.

The game is brimming with memes, puns, and general wacky nostalgia that kept me with a smile on my face the whole playthrough. What an enjoyable world they have built. Great sense of humor.

Gameplay is all exploration and puzzle based, with a handful of tools that get upgraded with features throughout the game. The puzzles aren't hard enough that I had to consult a guide or anything, but there was a good amount of challenge present in figuring out what tools to utilize and when. Lots of searching for collectibles and foraging for money and "Likes" to complete quests that are for the most part pretty inconsequential to the plot, but it is in good fun and helps with the worldbuilding. I am a fairly thorough sniffer of secrets and found nearly everything in one playthrough, and without achievements, branching paths, or multiple endings, this doesn't present much in the realm of replay value for me.

The story ramps from knowing nothing and experiencing the virtual world as a stranger, to following breadcrumbs that feed into a story just vague enough to leave you with a sense of mystery even when it's all said and done.

I run on an older laptop and had some fps issues only during the final level that made it unplayable, but running it in windowed mode solved that.

I really liked Jazzpunk too, which the devs have mentioned as a strong inspiration for this, so if you like this or that, there's a strong recommendation both ways.

Play it! It's a good one!

Alright, so, I vaguely remember cluelessly crashing through some small portion of this when I was about 10 years old, on a cousin's new Gateway computer sometime around when it apparently first released. After that memory surfaced all these years later, I decided I needed to dig around and get to playing the Journeyman Project trilogy as a whole.

The gameplay style is like no game I'd ever played through before, kinda like Myst as I understand it, in that you travel through a 3D world, with a directional cursor, only stopping at certain junctions of your movement directions to spin in place, investigate your near environs, and interact with what you can, y'know, picking up items and using them on other items to solve puzzles and unlock areas and whathaveya. I've played a good handful of point and click adventures, and that last part is highly reminiscent of that point-and-click problem solving method with aggravating solutions that sometimes feel so out of left field that you may find yourself using every item available on every other item available just to make something, anything at all, happen. Luckily, we live in the internet age where solutions aplenty are available online with a quick search, but that doesn't mean I won't make myself suffer for at least half an hour of aimless wandering in-game before breaking down and resulting to google. I like a *good* puzzle, but 90's "adventure" type games can be awful that way, in specific.

There's not much in the way of character interaction, as you are a time traveler and interacting with inhabitants of the past is strictly forbidden. Your in-screen AI avatar doles out warnings and advice off and on, to keep you from a bevy of instant death outcomes you could otherwise walk facefirst into. The deaths don't amount to much though, as it just forgivingly respawns you right before you made your fatal mistake. They are usually accompanied with a well illustrated image of yourself being fed to machinery, or chucked off a cliff, or lasered to death in a number of ways. Some can be pretty humorous, so I found them worth walking into at least once to see the result. SO yeah, there is no combat really, as your time agent status disallows that, but there are a few environmental opportunities to harmlessly incapacitate the people who might get in your way.

The story is fun, just revolves around a secretive government agency tasked with making sure time travelers don't tamper with the past in any big way. This, of course, happens from the get-go, and without spoiling too much, the story explores some fun thoughts on diplomacy, proliferation, bureaucracy, and sure, why not, the nature of time travel.

The graphics are what this upgraded version seems to have improved most on, having seen some pretty gnarly screenshots from the previous versions. They're still considerably dated by today's standards, but there's just a good nostalgic feel to them. The live action actors are pretty enjoyable, and I didn't find their performances lacking, though it can be a bit sci-fi cheese at times, but I think you should understand that sci-fi cheese is what you're in for. I can only hope the cheese will sustain you as it did me.

This is definitely a niche game for reaching that nostalgia itch, if not for this IP particularly, but as a relic of its time. It was worth the $10 to me, but I can fully understand it wouldn't be everyone's cuppa tea.

=======================================================

In other news, The Journeyman Project 2: Buried in Time, and 3: Legacy of Time, never received the pampering remake this first part did, but they are available on GOG and run great on modern machines. They really are great quality if this one's up your alley, and the time periods they explore are more modern to near past, as well as some fun ancient lost civilization delves. Dirt cheap, to boot!

This runs like garbage on my fairly average laptop, which is hard to believe, for what it is.

Nihilism, defeatism, general nonsensical plot, every character is a fish or fish inhabiting.

Without over-explaining and giving too much away, there's nothing good this game will do for your life. It's not mechanically fun to play, no mystery it presents is ever brought to solution, and overall it's just projects a generally rotten philosophy on life.

It's free, but even then... nah, don't do this to yourself.

I have played this game for nearly 20 years. I have stepped away many times, but a nostalgia always has me return for varying periods, occasionally paying membership, to support the game I have sunk more time in than any. My playtime in Steam is not the entire amount, and I couldn't even estimate what that total time would be.

I have watched it greatly evolve in gameplay, graphically, and financially. I've had friends come and go. I've died many times and lost fortunes in poor investments and poor battle tactics. I am not a top player by any means, but I have a good time. Mostly.

The storylines are pretty neat. There have been a series of in-game ages that have come and gone, mostly marked by massive struggles and dead gods. Every player, at this point in the story, runs around with a World Guardian title because the age has passed where the player had successfully defended from some past ultimate destructive force. Now there's a bigger thing than that bigger thing! To keep that story rollin' uphill forever, I guess. Unmitigated escalation. Forever. But hey, in the meantime, the world is full of all kinds of civilizations- some more buried by the ages than others, some long since dead- all a real joy to discover storied histories of. This is easily Runescape's high point, in my opinion. Sadly, there are many plot points and histories available only to the highest leveled players, through high level questing and other assorted grinding. Questing gameplay can be fun. It's very point and click adventure type fare. Go here, get that, go there, get those, come back, make a thing, use it in a puzzle somehow, usually get some combat wrap-up in with a bossguy with two ultimate forms or some nonsense like that, who will probably kill you a dozen times before you look up a series of tricks to best them or discover that you're wildly underpowered for the fight and you guessed it- Back to grindin' for equipment and levels..

Controls are simple, point and click, right click for options. You can assign a horde of hotkeys to actions in battle if you need to be a pro about it, but it's really not necessary for anything but high level bossing.

There are fun times to be had. There are also incredibly grindy times to be had. With 30 something skill sets to grind your brains out in, I'm surprised I have the fortitude to type this out. Increasing the level limit in some of these skills from 99 to 120, while holding to that increasingly, crazily steep xp curve, Jagex would have any players go braindead, just so long as their players keep paying for those memberships.

The graphics, while seeing engine updates and polishing up many times over the years, are not impressive by a long shot. There are dozens of mmorpg's out there that outshine Runescape by multitudes in the visual department. This is a battle of catch-up that will never be won. Granted, the low poly, colorful art style can be charming in its own way.

The literal thousands of items, from buckets to tier 99 Godkilling weaponry, are certainly something to wrap your quickly diminishing brain and bank space around. The equipment (If you've grinded enough to meet requirements for what you want to use) can add some variation to combat, but I never found it too terribly deep. The best equipment combinations boil down to having crazy amounts of gold to invest, crazy amounts of time to invest, and crazy amounts of crazy to crazy. Just... crazy.

Also, don't forget to pay-to-win! Jagex has made many tweaks and name changes to their in-game gambling that can be fueled with real-world money purchases, in an attempt to evade the pay-to-win title, but "Treasure Hunter" sill stands to take your money in exchange for a chance at in-game exp, gold, high-end equipment, and other game-altering items. Considering the ever-present opportunities for members to make crazy fast exp gains in all skills, compared to non-members, is pay to win in and of itself, the mid to high-end equipment is also only usable by members. Make no mistake, Runescape *is* pay to win.

In-game achievements: holy crap, literally thousands of achievements, (ignore the steam ones, they're minimal and crazy easy) covering every aspect of gameplay, a great deal of them requiring dozens of hours of play time each to complete, and some, infinitely more due to their dependence on rare drops. You can't walk into this looking to be a completionist. I am thoroughly convinced this is how people die.

Jagex, still heavily invested in the game, does present regular bug fixes and new content. The new content generally contains some small snippet of the ever growing lore in the form of a quest or new area or some new high exp grind activity or minigame and ultimately, just some new power creep equipment to make all other equipment instantly de-value. What a market!

Final thoughts? Uhh... A small portion of the game is available for free. Try it out, could be fun for you. I manage to avoid MMORPG's like the plague, but the nostalgia for this one still gets me occasionally. Without the nostalgia, I'm unsure this game would have much draw.

Get in that desert! Bust some heads and find out who's screwin' over who! (It can be you!) Amass a fortune of bottlecaps and put it all on black! (or don't!) Get your ♥♥♥♥ torn up by ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ deathclaws! (No real option there) Be offensively stupid in conversation! (for funsies!) Arm yourself to the teeth with tiny warheads! (Or 9mm! Or samurai swords! Or chainsaws! Or douchey companions! Oruhhhh a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of other fun things!)

You want a smorgasbord of options on how to play the game? You got it. New Vegas plays however you want right up to your final chosen mark on the Mojave.

It can be a real moody atmosphere, post-apocalyptic wasteland and all, but it is a beautiful game. The most poorly aged graphical point would be NPC faces, for me, but they're not terrible. Even slightly older computers (like mine) shouldn't have trouble running this at a decent clip.

There's all kinds of good writing here. Great science fiction, political intrigue, horrors of war, dark comedy, the perseverance of mankind, and if you start off with a special perk, a whole bunch of really absurd comedy lumped in there. Your companions (and the Mojave at large) come to you with their concerns, and if you'll listen, you'll be sent headlong into their backstories and gofetchum sidequestums. It really helps immerse the player into the history of the area and to understand the instabilities at work behind the scenes. The tone and atmosphere of each DLC area is quite different, all contributing to the story in their own unique way. Great additions to the game.

In a thorough playthrough, (Like holy crap, my blind first run took 300+ hours) you can max out your stats and be pretty darn near unkillable with the right perks, but the main story can be blazed through in a tenth of that time. I do really like seeing all a game can offer, and Vegas has offerings in spades.

The biggest downside, of course, is that the game is more than ten years old and doesn't see any support from the developers at this point. The surprisingly active mod community has taken the reigns here and, through the forums and Nexus, has released a series of mods that tackle crashes, glitches, and other instabilities like a champ. This game wouldn't be what it is without the community. I haven't modded beyond just making the game more stable, but if you're into mods that improve visuals or upset the order of things and fundamentally change the gameplay, there are tons of those options available too.

So yes. I highly recommend.

I had not played this when it originally came out, so there isn't a nostalgia for me in playing as there may be for others, but I really enjoyed the game as it is.

The art is really neat and the plot is fun to follow through this world they've built on central american folklore.

There were a handful of places where I got stuck and had to consult walkthroughs, not because I didn't understand the puzzles, but because the controls were often screwing with me or things were confusingly presented and difficult to properly interact with. I played this with a controller, initially without understanding that it was a point and click game, which is strange, because some things are nearly impossible to properly interact with without supplementing your controller with an occasional directed mouse click. This was really frustrating only to discover about a third of the way through the game, and on accident.

Control gripes aside, this is a great game that I think anyone who enjoys a good adventure will like.

This is a game I've owned for years but always come back to, just to screw around and try to grab a few more achievements, many of which are quite difficult.

The humor present in completely destroying someone's bone structure just so you can lance out their organs (failing or otherwise) and drop in a shiny new one... That's the long and short of the gag, really. Heart, brain, kidney, eye, teeth, and a handful of other curious and completely alien organs are all up for replacement, whether you're safe in the O.R., rolling down endless hospital corridors, in the back of an ambulance being driven by a crazy person, or in a zero G environment high above the earth, you'll find a plethora of surgical tools available to you to make it happen however you think it maybe ought to!

The controls are just a little QWOPy, but can be effective enough, with practice, to pull off these procedures with as little blood loss as you can manage. Successful surgeries are rated against the amount of time they take, and the amount of unnecessary damage and blood loss you cause the patient.

This is just a lot of fun, and I'd suggest it to anyone... except maybe the squeamish sorts?

I really wanted to like this game. The concept is really neat and the gameplay seemed cool.

Check out the forums for the rundown, which are just droves of bug reports that make the game kinda unplayable as presented. Many of which have no presented workaround. Mainly holes in maps that drop the player out of the world and issues that wreck your trunk's inventory.

Bad times, man. I'll come back to the game after a few updates and hope for something better.

UPDATE: Some time I later, I came back to it. Nothing has really improved, but I wanted to play through the game this time. Definitely faced a handful of glitches that caused me to replay segments, but I did make it.

The story is super minimal, the backstory of which is presented solely through a handful of documents you stumble into. You drive, you rest, you drive, you run outta gas, you walk, you drive, you rest... it goes.

And the ending, ! uhhh.... first off, the ending glitched on me and wrecked any kind of intended impact it was supposed to have on me, showing me an unrelated snippet of document and trapping me in an inescapable situation. Clueless, I had to research what the ending was supposed to be like, and eventually saved and exited, came back and got the real... uhhh,,, Ending? Suffice to say I was underwhelmed.

The game's fun in its own way, what with an economy of sorts to try to game in order to upgrade your car, and there's some driving and a decent bit of exploring and scavenging. The gameplay is there! it's good, even.

The mess of bugs and the complete lack of developmental support really make this game just... kinda bad? If you can get a steep discount and can put up with the bugs, go for it, I guess.

I bought this a while ago, gave it a co-op playthrough and enjoyed it. Good fun, *amazing* animation style, good challenge.

BUT

I had a hankering to go back and play it recently, and now it lags/freezes every few seconds (same computer as before), during the menus, during the gameplay, just all the time. This makes it ultimately unplayable, unfortunately. Similar feedback from other users on the forum has gone without any apparent solution or workaround, let alone response from developers.

A solid DONOTBUY unless you don't mind the return process in the event that it runs poorly for you as well. A good solid buy if it works out for you... but, how long will it work? Couldn't say.
