I thoroughly enjoyed playing the game. Never owned an N64 myself but the way the characters "talked" and the crunchy sound filter hit the nostalgia bone well enough.

The controls work well enough. Your character is a bit floaty but not to the point of it being frustrating. The only time movement was occasionally an issue was in Walter's stage where my Left/Right controls would reverse (maybe something to do with the locking camera angles in the room?). The wall jumping was also a little clunky and would sometimes not act as expected but there are very few parts where that is crucial where the game will punish you for failure.

Once you start getting into the puzzle, be prepared to have a lot of tabs open in your browser. If you don't have a second monitor I could see this part getting very annoying. If you do, just make sure to have your browser set to open on the monitor your game isn't on. Your still retain control of the game regardless of where your window focus is so you can still move around while these windows are opening.

As far as the puzzles themselves, I had a lot of fun solving them with a few other friends who were also running the game. I will admit, if not for them I'd still probably be stuck in a certain barrel room, and I never even did Giovanni's room (sorry Dev). That being said, there are still areas and puzzles I have yet to figure out. So even though I've "beaten" the game, there's still more to find.

I was having fun with the game until I reach 3-13, where it became blatantly obvious that the opposing parade straight up cheats compared to your units, summoning healer units 3x faster than you would be able to (even if you somehow had the motivation to summon them). I'm fine with games being hard but just facing an opponent with unlimited resources and less than half of your cool down times is where my fun stopped.
I'm sure I could grind against lower stages or the one tour I have unlocked until I over-level the stage, but everything up till this point had been beatable with some strategy. Maybe if I had some sort of indication of how strong the opponent was I'd know what the game was expecting of me, but as it stands I'm not going to just blindly grind until I can suddenly progress.

After the long wait from the kickstarter I was not disappointed.
Everything about the gameplay just feels right. There are familiar mechanics and abilites to metroidvainias I've come to expect but there were a few surprises as well. The game also does a decent job of guiding your play if your having trouble, via npc dialogue (assuming you don't skip it). All in all, if your a fan of Metroidvainias and in particular if your were looking for the spiritual successor to SOTN, this is what your looking for.

Fast paced, bloody, rogue-like fun with plenty of replayability and tons of secrets to unlock.
