I was a fan of original AoM, so to me this one has very special place in my heart... AND this lived up to all the hopes I had for it.

Not only did it revamp nearly every aspect (for the better), but they improved the gameplay, UI and AI. They even improved some of the old campaign missions. Some of the gameplay elements need a little balancing (all the Egypt missions are a bit harder), but I still think it nailed everything it needed to be. Some reviews complained about the voice acting being not as good, however the new voice acting seems more appropriate. I always found it weird that the Greeks, Norse and Egyptians had American accents in all the cut scenes. I also love that they kept the weird cheat codes in. Some of them are hilarious.

The most exciting part about this is that they showed they are willing to add more gods to the roster with the inclusion of the Fryer DLC. Also the little mission that comes with the DLC was also professionally done too. This makes me excited for more AoM in the future.

It does have some flaws. For one, it removed the ability to read some cool lore on some of the upgrades. Even though the AI is better, it is far more aggressive. In fact the reason the Egypt levels are a pain, is because the monuments of Set makes the barracks and migdol stronghold units train stupidly fast. This makes the AI just spam you with units. The other issue is that the AI of the player units will just pause (sometimes) for like a full second before making a move unless tell it to make a move. Then there are some of the weird glitches where would get stuck and then it can't move. And all it did was move from point A to B. Are these issues a deal breaker? For me no, but I feel I need to voice them regardless.

PS: This is true way you remake a game Blizzard. Not what you did to Warcraft 3 with Reforged. Take some notes

TL;DR: The game is amazing and if you want a time-killer, this is it. Trust me. Worth every penny. And deserving of it's many awards.

I will try and leave out as many spoilers as possible. I bought this to keep myself busy during my vacation and I have a rule to myself that I try and not review until I finish it. Technically I am not finished yet, but I finished my first successful run and did a few extra runs just make sure I still like it. Well I can say with certainty this game is fun. I am gonna say a few things about the game on certain things:

Gameplay 9/10

The game has a way to make you feel like you have power. The fact that every run is different, especially if you do I like I do and pick the weapon that is empowered, then you will not get bored with it. Note that if you do not like rogue-likes then rather take a rain-check. However if you are curious like I was, then this game is perfect, as there is a god-mode in the settings menu making it a bit easier (note I had this turned off and I beat it). Though it should be noted that the game is great at giving a sense of progression even if you fail. So far I have not experienced a single instance where it was because the game is bugged out, things were way too hard, or a frustrating mechanic (like being trapped while there is an explosion going off, looking at you Diablo III). Every failed run makes gives you rewards for permanent upgrades. This game's controls are smooth and responsive, and even though you can feel that it would be nice to use a controller, mouse and keyboard is just fine. I was confused at the start about the controls. So I would've liked at least some quick pop-up on the controls at the start. As there is no indication of how to move. You do get the little pop-up after you pick a weapon, but I feel that is technically too late. Even if it is just a setting that I could turn off I would love it.

Story 10/10

This is by the the most fleshed out story I have experienced every. Almost every character has a lines that you could write a book with. I love that Zag gets cheeky with the narrator. Always a nice touch. Even tough failure is a part of rogue-likes, that made it part of the story. And the only way to really advance the story is to fail. And I like that. Makes gives me that sense of progression even if I am failing. I does get a little confusing at times though as there are many story lines and all of them come into conversation maybe later. Anyway still great story.

Atmosphere 10/10

Every graphical choice makes you feel like this is an epic escape attempt. The music is fantastic. I found myself just standing the one time listening to a song being sung. Background music is great too and if I am not mistaken the final boss music is on one of my Spotify playlists. Either way you look I feel like everything in this aspect is near perfect. No complaints here.

Overall 9.5/10

Well this is one of my new favourites if that is something to say about. This will definitely be a time-killer for me and enjoy this to bits. If you are still on the fence, ask someone who has it if you can try it, do a single ruin and feel if you like it. If you don't know someone who has it, then watch some gameplay and see if it is for you. If you need more motivation ask yourself this: When have you heard of an indie game winning multiple game of the year awards? For that matter when have you heard of a rogue-like, games notorious for being hard and frustrating, winning GOTY awards? The only real reason I can't give this a 10/10 is the fact that the there is no initial tutorial. There is no need for a whole training montage thing, just a little pop-up with the initial controls (like when you switch weapons) would do. Just so you don't feel instantly frustrated and lost. Still love this game though.

Early Access Review
This game is amazing, thrilling experience. The first time you load up you can feel the fear of the unknown sinking in. Here are the things that stand out the most to me:

- The sound and graphics (even on low).
- Even though the gun play is totally unique from any other game, it gives you so much more control and it feels completely natural.
- The dev team is super engaged with the community. From live gameplay streams, dev live streams for every update, to members of the dev team playing with content creators.\
- The community isn't toxic.
- No pay-to-win mechanics, lootboxes or any microtransactions.

To summarize:
Is this worth the money? if you got the required specs, most definitely.
