I got hooked 18 years later
I have heard of Larian Studios previously (either by watching small bits of Divinity: Original Sin from friends/family or watching a Twitch stream), but I never did end up installing until this past holiday season. Since there was a sale on the bundle of Larian games, I decided to give them a shot (starting of course with the earlier games). This is my first foray into the Divinity series, so here we go.

Overall, the gameplay reminded me of Diablo (1ish or 2ish)--that action RPG run-slash-loot loop. Instead of many small map instances, Divine Divinity gives you the overworld, and then dungeons. I'm not going to lie, revealing the overworld area by area (moving and removing fog) felt like doing a jigsaw puzzle ("Oooo so that's where this is!").

Difficulty Scaling was not bad. You can clearly tell the progression of enemy levels as the enemy templates progress (Orc -> Heavy Orc -> Elite Orc kinda thing). I found the highest difficulty to be a tad too much, so (really) my main recommendation is to start on Easy or Normal, then when you get to maybe level 25 bump it up if you feel like you're not challenged enough. End game level is around mid 40s to 50 (I cleared a lot of areas of mobs).

The story was standard (a lot of games in the early 2000s were alike in this way), characters felt witty, plenty of jokes that made me chuckle. As you get later in the game, you might notice some quests don't complete correctly for one reason or another. I believe a lot of that was fixed in a patch, but I guess I didn't have that version when I installed a couple weeks ago. The Larian forms helped a lot answer bug questions (like with Commander Ralph), so I definitely encourage a search if you find things are more hinky than normal.

Many of the older games I have on my Steam library are difficult to get into for one reason or another, but Divine Divinity definitely felt comfortable enough across my key points to keep me exploring.

Disclaimer: I left my game open for maybe ~1 total, so I think 35 hours is a solid run.
