I feel bad for the people that start with this game so that they can play them in chronological order and don't know that the rest of the series is actually good. The backtracking in this is atrocious. Ex: Didn't know beforehand that you need the green chemical from the training facility in the laboratory? Just backtrack through the annoying door animations that you NEED to see everytime and the elevator. Left an item behind so you can get it later because the inventory is trash? Backtrack. Another thing is the enemies. There is so little variety and because of that they like to spam the eliminator apes in packs of 2-3 so you can get stun locked to death and lose x amount of time. And they spawn again in the rooms you've been before after you complete certain things so the backtracking can be even more cancer. The ink ribbon system while I understand that it's there so you can't just save scum everywhere, it's bad for a first time player. How many are there left? Do I have enough to save in the end so that I don't lose like 1 hour of gameplay? You just don't know until you have played through it once. All in all if I didn't know that the rest of the series is actually good I would have thought that the other games are exactly like this and never tried it again.
