Ready or Not is not an accurate title. PTSD Simulator is better, and this game deserves it. At last, you get to experience all the detailed suffering that plagues modern America while you and your friends try not to accidentally shoot each other or flashbang yourselves.

This game has such a carefully crafted vibe to it that's hard to describe. It's a virtual game show about stealing a cashing out money, hosted by AI's (that are voiced by AI too), where sponsors have in game placements in things like the daily missions, and people explode into coins when you kill them so its PG for in game sponsors. The lows are pretty low but man are the highs sky high. What a fun game.

My review of the game;
It's very good.

Allow me to elaborate;
It's very very good and I think anybody who likes true survival horror games should play this game.

Allow me to elaborate further;
There are 3 main elements that make this game truly amazing, and those are the story, the gameplay, and the worldbuilding.

- Story

While this game's story is by no means dark souls levels of vague, its not the most linear story either. I wouldn't consider this a downside though, as there are plenty of cutscenes and encounters for both normal story telling, and more psychological dream like story telling. The game plays very close to its chest with the major story details until the end of the game, and I cannot thank the devs enough for this choice, as the ending has such an emotional pay off. It's one of those endings you need to sit in silence for a minute or two after, just to process the feelings you have. There aren't that many characters in the game, and while most aren't super memorable, the important ones are very memorable, so I wouldn't consider it a huge issue. This game also has a number of homages to other media, like Evangelion, Ghost in the Shell, Lovecraft, and of course Silent Hill/Resident Evil. While this may sound off putting at first, I cannot express with words how seamlessly they fit into the story of Signalis. The key difference, I believe, is that the devs didn't just include these scenes as a cool nod or a distraction, they included them because they understood fully why those aspects worked, and adapted and modified them to fit into the story perfectly. At the end of the game, there are different endings you can get, but the way you get them is different than most, as it's based off how you play the game rather than completing certain objectives.

- Gameplay

The gameplay of Signalis is wonderful, it's the classic Silent Hill style of survival horror mixed with Resident Evil's small inventory. The guns feel powerful but not broken, healing feels effective, and practically every item has real purpose to it. Your main battle outside of the shambling zombies you find is going to be the small inventory. Of course you'll need healing and weapons, but you'll also probably want ammo or a defensive tool. Not to mention you might need a certain item to complete a puzzle or explore a room. ALL of these things take up precious real estate in your pockets and most of the games decision making comes from making sacrifices in terms of what you carry or can't carry.

As this is a survival horror game, there are a number of puzzles. The first few puzzles are fairly simple to get your feet wet, but in the mid to late game the puzzles become some real brain teasers that make you feel really smart to solve. They are challenging puzzles, but the game gives you everything you need to solve it (though you may have to backtrack every now and again to make sure you didn't miss anything).

- Worldbuilding

Lots of games want to have good world building, but this game I think has some of the best worldbuilding I've seen from any game. The setting is wholly unique from anything else I've watched or played, but it draws on just enough real world elements to help players immediately understand the overarching structure so you can focus on the details that relate to or enhance the main story. A lot of it's worldbuilding is done through various notes and documents you find throughout the game, but a fair chunk of its worldbuilding is done by just witnessing the remains of what was in the game's areas before you.

I will say if you aren't a fan of reading in video games, then the amount of reading you have to do can get tedious, as a lot of pretty important puzzle clues are found in notes or journals. This may lead you to find bits between cutscenes and combat somewhat boring. Trust me though, if you complete the game, the ending begs you to replay and try to find all the little bits of information you can to better understand the story.

- In closing

I think Signalis is a wonderful masterpiece of an indie horror game, and anybody who likes survival horror, emotional games, or non linear story telling should definitely give this game a try, as it is WELL worth its $20 USD price tag.

This game is so based. I love emergent story games like Mount and Blade or Long Dark survival mode and this is definitely one of them, but it more than that. It creates a story where you start off almost powerless and can rise to become a zombie horde slaying force of nature, but at any point in the game all it takes to end a run is 1 zombie from behind to get a surprise bite on you, so you always feel enough tension.

The modding community makes the game even more based.

Not quite as polished or refined as Nier: Automata but it certainly stands the test of time. Beautiful OST, great characters, interesting quests (side and main), and the classic Yoko Taro touch.
