I love this game. I'll just say it. Sure, I only have 4 hours in this version, but I keep coming back to this little guy that I only paid $1 for. That's a pretty good investment.

Really, it's simple. I love twin stick shooters. I love RPG's. So, you throw me into a twin stick shooter, let me gather loot and upgrade points? I'm a happy guy!

There are rogue-like elments, as the blurb mentions, but they're incorporated well. You spin around nuking monsters collecting your loot, then you can upgrade certain aspects on the fly. Your fire rate, your speed, things like that. When you die, you lose the buffs you've unlocked. Gather xp though, you can unlock skills which stick with you after death. The two of these combined are just enough carrot to keep you pressing on, especially as your toon becomes fully powered and you start to lay waste in more and more powerful fashion.

My favorite part of Hero Siege is that at heart, it's truly casual. Despite roguelike elements, the game is perfect for playing in small chunks when you only have a few minutes to spare. Plus, if you set it down and get wrapped up in some new shiny AAA title, the game is super simple to pick back up again days or even months down the line. You move with one stick, shoot with the other. What's to forget!

I like racing games. I lean more towards the arcade racers as simulators don't do much for me. I'm not a car guy and most of the things that sims go into mean absolutely nothing to me. Grid 2 is a weird one as it isn't really a simulator at all, yet it doesn't quite fit into the super-fast and drifty style of your common arcade racer.

Burnout and Forza Horizon are the kind of arcade racers that are usually right up my alley. Grid 2 just isn't quite there. All of the tracks consist of tight turns through city streets and country sides and the drift controls just aren't tight enough to make this game stand out from the pack. Too many times I've found myself leading a race for three laps only to blow in one hair pin turn that I *should* have drifted through. Although, it's possible I just suck!

Yet... I still find myself recommending Grid 2. Despite my dislike of it, it's not horrible. I still find myself drawn back to it time after time. When the controls are working, the races are fun. Just not quite Burnout/Forza Horizon fun. The stickers are paint job options are fun, yet there's no real incentive as you just have them, you don't have to unlock them. In fact, there's really not a whole lot of incentive to unlock stuff. The more I type, the more it's kind of a tough sell.

This racer's not great. It's not the worst racer you'll ever play. It's somewhere in the middle. The important bit is, if you watch the sales, you'll find it cheap and it makes good filler in between the next big thing in urban racing excitement.

Defiance feels like the ultimate tourist MMO.

It starts out with seeing the show on TV with the built in commercials. "Hey, that place looks shiny and neat! Looks fun, we should visit!"

Then you buy your tickets, take the flight and arrive. You wander gawking at everything with wide innocent eyes, having zero clue what the hell is going on, but man it looks cool!

After a while, you get tired of sightseeing, so you suck it up and decide to dip your toe into the pool, test the waters. You grab what looks like a quest, studying the map for a minute, make a vague guess as to where you're supposed to go. You hope on your rented ATV and head out across the country side.

As you're riding, you run into what you think are locals. They're mean and grumpy; they call you names and are zero help.

You put up with the angry locals for a day or two as you try and find your way around. Eventually, you *think* you have a general idea of how the quest system works; you how know how to get to one or two key locations in town. You know how to avoid the dangerous locals; you stick to the mildly annoying ones. How you're having some fun getting into minor fire fights, picking up bits and pieces of armor and weapons as souvenirs. You're amused, you're satisfied.

Next thing you know, a week has passed. You're bored with going back and forth to town and the sections you're familiar with. Branching out to new areas feels like too much work. It's been a week; you've had your fun. Vacations over, time to go home.

You uninstall, move on to the next game and tell your friends, "eh, that games was all right for $5", and now you feel more connected to Julie Benz every week when you watch the show because "You've been there".

And that's all right!

When I first stumbled upon Steam World Dig on a daily deal, I didn’t expect too much. It was cheap, it looked decent from the videos. It promised platforming action, the oh so popular buzzword “Metroidvania” and more. Once I got into it, I found that this game is a solid mix of all of those elements, all without trying too hard or being taking itself too serious. That is to say, you’re not going to find yourself faced with any near impossible puzzles or jumps; just lots of exploring, discovering things and some light hearted puzzles.

Don’t go in expecting Spelunky. Don’t go in expecting Terraria, Mario or any other number of games that “Metroidvania” makes you think of. Go in expecting a good way to blow twenty minutes at time, driven on with that carrot of digging your way to the next ‘level’. Steam World Dig does a good job of blending all of these game elements together to give you a game that feels familiar without being a carbon copy of those that came before it. Go in expecting that, you’ll have a good time.

The game’s got a good sense of humor too, which is nice. While something such as Spelunky or Battleblock Theater is great for short bursts of game play in between the interruptions of your real world life, Steam World will fill that gap nicely without the stress and anxiety!
Just relax, it’ll be okay!

Let's be honest here. It's essentially the same game as Sniper Elite V2, especially as far as mechanics go. The sniper rifles look and feel the same, the shoot them same, the still fill you with excitement as you hit a headshot from 900 yards. Nazi Zombie Army 2 is essentially a re-skin of V2. You'll find yourself in some of the very same maps and locations, recognizing much of the same scenery as you did the first time around. However, there's one important difference: Every single one of these maps has been decimated by war and they're filled with shambling zombies!

There's a couple of details about this game that makes me love it, just a hair more that V2. Almost all of that love steams from atmosphere. Nazi Zombie Army 2 is fantastic in that atmosphere department and I'm not even talking about the zombies. I'm a horror fan. A big horror fan at that. I co-host three fairly popular horror podcasts, so I'd like to consider myself well versed. (Check the links in my profile if you're a podcast fan!) The devs took a lot of time and research to make the horror tropes in NZA2's looks and sounds really pop to make this a really stellar horror experience. From the very start of the game, we're struck with an orange color pallet that screams Halloween. The music is an homage to bands like Goblin that have crafted many common themes in the genre to make the game even sound familiar if you're a fan of horror movies. It's just a really great package as far as horror nerdery goes!

Then, we get to the zombies. Even they’re creepy! They’re also a good homage to horror nerdery, pulling more from the Romero Zombie well vs. the Zak Snyder fast zombie well. The shamble, wobble and lurch, which makes getting those sweet sweet headshots all the harder. But those headshots will happen. You’ll get those amazing slow motion long distance shot ending in an x-ray that shows the bullet pass through the skeleton of your zombie of choice. This time around though, you can feel all giddy and excited without feeling bad for it. You’re shooting the undead, not other humans!

The only note to be wary of with Nazi Zombie Army 2 is that it is clearly designed towards a co-op experience. Most missions end in a “survive the waves” shoot-a-thon that while flying solo, can be a bit tiresome and difficult. You can play solo however! Just make sure you’re going to have to work for it a bit harder.

Sometimes, you need a game that's frenetic, fast paced and full of chaos. You need some escapism so you get away from the humdrum of your day job by pretending to be some beefcake named Slab Rockhard blast some bugs to bits with your AK - 22.

Other times though, you need to come home, kick back, crack a brewski and chill out. Take it easy, shoot some pool like a pro and relax. That's what you have Pool Nation for. It's zero pressure, it's zero chaos. It's 100% cool, daddy-o. It's got some great physics too, so you can shoot pool and feel like a king.

Because some times, you need to come home and pretend that you're a slick mo-fo pool shark. Because if you tried to play pool in the real world, people would realize you're a 40 year old dork in dad jeans try his damnedest to look cool.

I uh...that may have gotten too personal.

I had a good childhood. My parents were pretty lenient, I was allowed pretty free reign on what I did growing up. It was pretty sweet. The reason I decided to bore you with this little anecdote mind you...is because one of the few times I remember getting banned from my Super Nintendo for a week was due to Super Ghouls and Ghosts. That game was hard as hell and instigated fits of anger on a regular basis. Controllers were broken, swears were shouted loudly, and about the time the controller bounced off the screen of the TV as I screamed "♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥!", it was all over.

Despite all that? I still loved it.

Enter Volgarr the Viking. That little love song to Ghouls & Ghosts was written, because Volgarr is a love song written to Ghouls & Ghosts. The game feels straight out of the Super Nintendo long box. The challenges are unrelenting and difficult from the very beginning. Yet, there's a lot of nostalgia and enjoyment packed in here that leads you to keep hitting retry and going back over the same deaths time and time again. Veterans of Volgarr the Viking will say that the game is easy and comes down to memorization. Sure, it does come down to memorization. That memorization comes from a drive to perfect the game and push through to the end that leads to you eventually become a master of the game. Just like its predecessor, Super Ghouls and Ghosts. (Important note: No, I haven't mastered yet. By god, I will though, just to spite this game!)

And yes, the loud swearing still happens with Volgarr. Not the controller breaking though. I mean, I'm an old man now; I'm above throwing and breaking controllers. Not from any kind of evolved self-control mind you, simply because I know what it costs to replace those things! That and the dirty looks I get from my wife when I start teaching our kid colorful ways to insult my PC.

Remember when Trails came out? It was super hard, yet entertaining in their use of physics with tight controls and well thought out maps and levels that were hard, but managable once you mastered the controls!

Urban Trail Freestyle is just like that, if it was the same game with ugly textures, floaty controls, damn near impossible obsticles and your roommate kicking you in the beans periodically through game play.

For $.99, I got 45 minutes to an hour of playtime out of it. It's not unplayable yet it's not really enjoyable either. They tried to spice it up with a half assed trick system that you have absolutely no control over. The controls are sloppy at best and will lead to much swearing and teeth gnashing. I would have played through it, except for a near impossible obsticle half way through world 4 (I think) and after 15 minutes of retrying that, it dawned on me I'd have more fun going to chew tinfoil

But hey, at least it's got cards!

Every Summer Sale I find a gem that I wasn't expecting or even looking for. There's always one game that comes along super cheap and it sucks me in and I play it more than any other game I bought during the sale.

We're only on day 4 of the Summer Sale for 2014 and I'm confident in saying that Battleblock Theater is that game! It's great!

If you've played Castle Crashers, you're already familiar with the art style and humore. They're a blast, natch. For Battleblock, they've done away with the click fest hack and slash style and given us a platformer fest that's full of mayhem and puzzles! The controls are super responsive, the game is challenging without being punishing and provides a ton of laughs with the narration and other sight gags packed in.

This game's great! If you're debating it at $3.75 in the summer sale, or any other sale for that matter? Go for it! Hell, I'd be happy even if I'd paid $15 for it.

Thanks again Mr. Noseybonk for the gift!

I had always considered myself a level headed guy. I've always walked away from a fight, avoided confrontation made sure to keep harsh comments at a low volume so that there was no chance that my intended target might hear me. I'm not even big hunting, not that I have a problem with it. I just don't want to see soft bunnies and cute squirrels get obliterated at the twitch of my finger.

Apparantly, once you put a sniper rifle in my hands however, all that peace loving hoo haa goes right out the window. The window I'm crouched behind as I take a deep breath, hold it, and draw a bead down on your unibrow as viewed through my scope.

Is Sniper Elite V2 a perfect game? Does it have a riveting story? Are its graphics amazing? Nah, not really. It's a whole hell of a lot of fun though. The guns feel great, they function great, and you can even notice slight differences in mechanics between the different rifles. If you're looking for a twitch shooter, this isn't it. However, if you're not good at twitch shooters? Don't shy away from this, you get ample time and it's a blast!
