As someone who bought this game the day it came out in 2013, I kept my hopes high as Wollay posted updates over the next 6 years. Every post hyped me up more than the last. The game seemed to be headed in the direction all of us wanted.

Then it happened. From the darkness shined a new Wollay tweet in late September 2019. Then another. Then the next day, another. Then the one. "Cube World will be released on Steam!"

This is it. The moment so many of us had been waiting for. All these updates posted, plus all the new ones Wollay was teasing all month. Cube World was going to release and be the game of our dreams.

Release day came. We all bought it/downloaded it as fast as we could and dove into the new game that Wollay had created. But, something was off. Where was the content? Where were the systems that Wollay had talked about adding? Odd. Hm, maybe they aren't ready yet. He did just update the engine before launch. Surely he's updating them! Right? Right.

Wrong. We were all so, so wrong. *Almost* every update posted from release in 2013, to 2019 release was scrapped because of this new engine. All meaningful progression had been scrapped for a new psuedo-endless grind that involved clearing regions of the map, obtaining the best gear you can and then when you're ready to head to the next region?

You lose everything.

Yes. Everything. Every item you obtained (with exceptions) becomes A PART of said region and cannot be used in subsequent regions, forcing you to redo the grind you just did in a new area. While not an entirely terrible system, it could take you 15 hours to find the glider again in the new zone, and then it's already time to move on. It could also take you those same 15 hours to find a weapon strong enough to clear each dungeon in the region.

Some of us made excuses for Wollay. Some of us were sure new stuff was coming. Surely now that the game was on Steam, he had the resources to push updates, Right? Even at a slow rate, we'd still get new stuff in game, right?

Wrong again. Wollay not only released a product completely different than advertised, he went radio silent AGAIN and abandoned the project he so called "loved." I waited 6 years for this disappointment, and to this day it hurts me remembering this gem. I want to love it. I did love it, but it's just not what it could have been.

The game is a great time, and refreshing when you're exploring your first area, but every area after that feels like a chore. It's truly a shame. Do not buy the game unless you are prepared to feel the way I do, or unless you have some friends to meme around with.

This game is the biggest disappointment of the 20 years I've had on this Earth and I hope to God that no one else ever has to feel the way I do. I love you Cube World, I love the memory of you, but I am nauseated at the thought of losing everything I once hoped for.

EDIT: I am now 24 and this is still haunting me the same as it did when I wrote this review.
