Unfortunately i don't think i'll be able to recommend this game for long—the current plans seem to be to remove everything that makes this game stand apart from Splitgate 1.

In its current state, the game is extremely fun. However:

I loved Splitgate 1 so much that I was kind of upset at all the changes Splitgate 2 made. I was an avid hater of the faction system since day 1, I hated abilities, I hated the rounds, I hated everything about it. I hated that the lack of portal walls meant I couldn't chain portal everywhere like in the first game.

Within a couple of hours of playing this game, I realized I was wrong. Even compared to the first, this game was a masterpiece. The factions add a new and unparalleled amount of depth to the gameplay which help make SG2 far more replayable than the first game, the maps are designed much more carefully and encourage more fun movement than just chain portalling everywhere, and the modes unique to SG2 as opposed to just ripped from Halo are just more tense, more strategic, and more fun.

And apparently all of that is going away. For the relaunch it seems 1047 has opted to remove factions, add more portal walls everywhere so that chain portalling reigns supreme once again and completely nullifies the extremely fun Titanfall-esque movement mechanics, remove Hotzone in favor of KOTH, and remove portalling from Splitball, the mode designed around portals.

Anyways play the Beta 2.0 while you can because it seems the full game will be but a shell of it.

The rest of the game is just barely good enough to make up for the atrocity against signposting and game design that is Old Aperature.

Awesome game with great stealth mechanics and the single best OST to ever grace my ears.

Really, REALLY suffers from "wanting you to play a specific way without being clear what that way is" disease. My initial review was SCATHING because at 11 hours in I was still playing wrong without realizing and just thought the game was ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. I was not only under the impression that going loud was expected at some point, but also that every single enemy on the map would rush me down when I did and therefore the easiest way to play was to take out everyone completely silently and I would just reset the level whenever I bungled the stealth. This resulted in multi-hour runs just getting reset because one person saw me. I HATED this game.

The OST was so good, though, I decided to give it one more shot, and this time out of sheer desperation I decided NOT to kill every single enemy silently like I had done for every level prior. In fact, I tried not even going out of my way to kill people I didn't have to. Not only did it work, it turned a 4-hour level into a 6-minute one. Suddenly the limit on how many saves you can have didn't feel like such a CRIME.

Perhaps I made more wrong assumptions about the game than most people would because I've played GTFO and not Splinter Cell; it's hard to say. However, the game sure as hell doesn't do a great job making sure you understand the way you're supposed to play, it just punishes you if you don't. At least in my opinion.

The comparatively small amount of playtime I had after I stopped slamming my head into the same level for 8 hours straight was quite fun though.

If you love it when dying, loading a checkpoint, or opening a level all have a 96% chance to crash the game, spend 10+ minutes restarting said game god-knows-how-many times to "update" and "sync player data," and then delete all your settings, turn on nvidia reflex 👍

That said, the campaign was fun enough for me to finish it before I realized what was causing the crashes, so that's gotta be saying something.
