My heart's pulse increased to 160 during and after the game and won't go back to normal. I think I might need a doctor.

10/10 would jam to the music again

WARNING POTENTIAL SPOILERS! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Summary:
OneShot, a game about a small kid called Niko and her most important quest to deliver a lightbulb, or in this world the sun to the tower which is in the middle of the world. Niko has to go through 3 regions to get to the tower: The Barrens, The Glen, and The Refuge But Niko is not alone, YOU as the player are guiding her through the unknown world and seeing what has come to the world without a sun. On your way, you meet many characters and solve puzzles some of which are in the game but also outside of it. However, even till the end you always have to remember one important fact, you only have one shot.

Design:
The look of the game is really nice from the pixel art to the lightning effects which also played a huge part in the game since the main character carries the sun which is the only reliable source of light in that world. The Music ohhhh the Music is so good to listen to it starts with a slow and sad vibe and gets more hopeful and cheery as you continue your journey. The Characters look unique and interesting from the minor bots to the important main character.

Gameplay:
I have played Oneshot and completed in ~7hours(including the Solstice route, excluding achievement hunt) which is short but to me, it felt longer than most games I played. The movement is basic but good enough so you won't get bored because you walk too slow. The controls are also basic which isn't that bad and expected of a story-driven game. The puzzles are really unique and I mean it. Some puzzles require a lot of out-of-the-box thinking but once you solve one, the feeling is indescribable.

Story:
Now the important part Story. The Story is well written and it doesn't overwhelm you with too many facts and/or secrets but the game still lets you get more details about the world and its inhabitants if you wish to explore the world. The Characters are interestingly written in a way that you could connect to them. The characters in the barren give the impression that the world ended and that it's hopeless. The characters in the glen are more hopeful and try to adapt to the world while the refuge characters try their best to make the world better. Like the music, the world at first impression is a lost cause but the more you explore the more you see the real value of this world(which makes it even more difficult in the end). Niko the Main character often confused as a cat is a kid who just got thrown into this situation and throughout the journey, you form a close connection and trust with Niko(again making it harder in the end!). The Ending is the most difficult thing I experienced in my life I spent 15 minutes thinking it through before making a decision(yes you make a decision in the end) and it still left me with mixed feelings but it's a good thing that there is another route...

The Solstice route:
This is one of the best "true ending" routes I have ever played. While most games just make you play the whole game again but complete some side quests. OneShot works with the Characters you met and the world you saw, and makes a whole new game experience. The puzzles are getting more interesting, you see the characters you met earlier, in more action and it introduces more good characters. Finally, the true ending is beautiful, a good way to wrap it up, and feels satisficing. Sadly you can't replay this route once you finished it(by normal means). I would have liked to replay it again even if it's not with the real Niko.

Personal Note:
The Solstice route made me have an internal conflict. Everything I thought I knew about story games was gone. I never had any really close connections with game characters and thought of them as such but I bonded with Niko in the span of 4+ hours, she felt like a real friend, and seeing that Niko left forever, and said goodbye to me, my first thought was that I wanted Niko back, I wanted to spend more time with Niko, I wanted to go on more adventures with Niko, I wanted to be with Niko. But in my conflict, I realized something:´"Isn't the memory fine?" I can still play the normal game like usual and finish the achievements to complete the game. After that, I realized that I don't need Niko anymore. Niko is happy with her Mother after all Niko is not a game character, Niko is a real being that's what the game tells you and I will respect that.

This is years after i put this review out and now i cannot, with all my heart, recommend this Game in this state. Bots running around cheating and spamming in all official valve servers is not acceptable. This Game was my main Game on Steam that i sunk too many hours in it and it's sad to see what has become of it. If you really want to play this Game use Community Servers that are moderated.

Edit: 16.09.2024
Seems like the issue has been resolved. for now.
