This will become one of my favorite games very easily.

I'll report back a month from today.

UPDATE: unsure if its been a month, i lost track of time because of how much i've been playing this game in my free time. this has become my favorite game as of late.

My only real gripe with this is that the servers are somewhat inconsistent, so it becomes frustrating sometimes when animations cancel eachother out because of a visual bug on my side. maybe my internet just sucks but besides that this game is a massive win and worth the purchase.

I've been playing this game since the beta, and I'd honestly go as far as to say its one of my favorite games. I love the animation style, the cosmetics (although they can be pricey) are a neat addition and allow for a lot of creative freedom for the game designers. Each character is unique in their own way, and have very creative attack animations.

For example. characters such as Tom and Jerry are trying to hit each-other but end up missing and hitting you instead. Or Bug's Bunny has a hammer space, and the new addition of Raven as a character really highlights that level of freedom they have as each individual character has a personality.

Generally speaking I just love fighting games, and playing this game, but I will be primarily focused on its shortcomings in this review.

Problem 1:
There has been a lot of balancing issues in the past. Once you reach the upper end of the skill ceiling for this game, you tend to see the same 3-5 characters and its simply because they have better attack animations. These balancing issues tend to make some characters generally unplayable without hours of practice (in the higher ranks) due to the less forgiving attack animations and movement related to those attacks.

On the contrary:
There has been significant improvements to air combat, and hit registering since the initial release of the full game. This has brought life back into a game that was otherwise on its way out. I have played through these last 3 seasons, and they have made the pace of matches significantly quicker as a result of more responsive air movement.

Problem 2:
This both is, and isn't game-play related, but the cosmetics in this game are somewhat unreasonably priced for my liking. Not to mention I've had a glitch where every time I attempt to open the shop, it crashes my game, which has been present since the initial release.

Not to mention, with the available emotes, emojis, and knockout animations, its almost as if they are TRYING to promote a toxic community. There is a significantly higher ratio of toxic and rage-bait emotes in comparison to the wholesome and positive emotes. Without a text chat in the game, and the small amount of positive emotes, it has the potential to leave you feeling upset at the player base and can often result in logging off the game with little motivation to play again.

I think that you will run into more toxic players than wholesome players after climbing the ranking system as well.

On the plus side,
I really enjoy the ranking system in this game. It feels pretty fair and balanced when it comes to earning rating points and ranking up in comparison to other games such as Rocket League, or CS2 where its not as clear how many wins you need to reach the next rank.

Sometimes you will be placed against a significantly lower ranked fighter, but their skill level does not reflect that, and I'm curious to know how that works. I rarely find myself in a match with someone who is not somewhat evenly matched to me, and if you're a competitive person like me, its refreshing to have accurate skill based matchmaking.

Overall, I really enjoy playing this game, but I would end this with saying its an acquired taste. There is a bit of a learning curve, and I think that if you're willing to stick it out you'll find its worth the hours you put in.
