I owned this on the playstation 1 in 1999. I then followed it when it became freeware and was picked up by the team that kept it alive until it appeared on steam.

This is not like your standard Blizzard age RTS (Warcraft, Starcraft, Command & Conquer, Age of Empires, and the like) in the sense that there is an evershifting tech war going on, in which you have to play rock paper scissors laser shotgun spock lizard.

RTS fans take a look. Free's a good price.

Paid DLC. During Beta.

Maybe finish the game before putting out paid content. Pay to win, avoid.

Do not buy Starforge. It is abandonware. Devs went on to make Reign of Kings. Don't buy that either.

Loaded up my game as Trevor, who woke up drunk on top of a mountain in a dress. Tripped/staggered forward and fell off the mountain and got wasted.

9/10, -1 because I couldn't hit the eagle with my RPG, too drunk

Online: Stole a jet, blew up a whole lot of folks who couldn't fight back. Flew into a pole, lost a wing, spun out of control back to the airbase to steal a new jet. Ejected into a tank shell to the face.

10/10

Early Access Review
(version 1.61 12/22/14)

Overwhelming amazing, this game is. Despite being early access (which I generally avoid) I managed to drop almost 700 hours into it. Ever since the mod API was implemented, the amount of customization of this game increased exponentially. the workshop makes it easy, and there are a lot of talented folks making a lot of just plain awesome.

That being said, what you get out of this game is largely dependant on the player. Currently, there are no objectives, and there are no missions. (Certain things suggest they will be added later) and the customization of any given world means that you can play it the way you want. World start options, amount of asteroids, tool efficiency, cargo capacity, spawning cargo (sort of NPC) ships, destructiblity of blocks and weapons, what mods are active (if any). World sizes can range from a 10km cube to infinite (though limited asteroids currently, something that is being worked on; procedural generation as you go)

the bad stuff: the game being early access gets the occasional bug. I've not encountered any that were totally game breaking, and the game isn't optimized yet, so it can become victim of horrible slowdowns and input lag spikes depending on what's going on around you, multiplayer still has some kinks to work out (latency and in some cases server stability)

TLDR: Great game. Minecraft in space. Still has bugs, but very awesome. Recommend if you like sandbox creation games.

**EDIT**

(1.098 / 9/08/2015)

so many patches later, they are implementing planets, a new multiplayer netcode, and several additional secondary mechanics have been added. Countless bugfixes every thursday, hotfixes on friday and scenarios, missions, and infinite worlds along with community made creations to find in world. Blueprints and creation from blueprints, and another 400 hours played.

**EDIT 2**

(11.24.2017)

No meaningful update. Netcode improvements and optimization improvements have been made and it's much better. Still being updated however, so I'm still waiting to play it. Still no folders for blueprints.

Early Access Review
First, let me say this game IS enjoyable. I do like certain elements, and I certainly had fun playing this game, and still play it now and again on occasion. If you lack other games, by all means give it a shot. It has vs. and co-op, so there's probably something for you in it. Pacing is very good, it's fast, there is very little respawn delays, combat has a tactical element to it, and overall design strikes me as very well thought out.

That being said, I do not recommend this game. I played it off and on during it's pre-steam release, and had no real trouble progressing through the ranks, I was able to get things for my mechs, and generally had fun doing it. Now, with the steam release, it supports the pay to win model FAR too heavily.

For one, unlocking a consumable permanant item is good, but you have to buy the same thing per mech. It's not globally unlocked. Which means if you want it, you have to buy it every time you want to try a new mech, which means that every time you do, you start with nothing. Or, You could pay 10 dollars and have it now.

Don't have any mechs? I was playing around, and each mech ranges in cost from 8k-18k in-game money. In a round, i got from 100-300 per (100 for middleground scoring TDM, 400 for MVP in co-op to wave 20) Weapons cost 6k+ for the alternate one and two each, meaning averaging 150 a 15 minute round, or 10/minute means 10 hours. To unlock one low cost thing. Or, You could pay 10 dollars and have it now.

As you progress, you gain both mech levels, and pilot levels. Pilot levels grant access to more potent/more frequent use permanant consumeables, internal mech parts, and mech levels allow you to use the alternate weapons. You are not able to buy those items until you reach a specific rank/level with mech or pilot. Or, You could pay 10 dollars and have it now.

Buying the parts with actual currency bypasses both the progression gates, and the grind to unlock anything. If you have nothing but time, and have the patience to grind out 60-70 hours, it will work for you. Or, You could pay 10 dollars and have it now.

They have to make their money to maintain development, but there's a point where costs become rediculous. Smurfing run rampant, and unless you drop money to unlock what you want, you won't have the competative edge to do well. It's not impossible, but when you go up against a fully unlocked mech with Fred the TV with no items and nothing else, it's unlikely that you're going to succeed.

TL:DR grind forever or pay money to win

This is an old school platformer explore/RPG with multiple endings. It's quite difficult, but has an amazing soundtrack and a great story. Def. one of the better indie games out there.

single player!
