I like the combat. The exploration is standard MV fare. The plot is a step above Pokemon, which isn't a high bar to clear, but it works well enough. The skill trees allow great customization and make most monsters feel unique.

However, the grind is unreal. Just imagine your typical Metroidvania grind, but every fight take 3-6 minutes instead of 3-6 seconds. My first suggestion is to go into the menu and double the battle speed, you'll thank me later.

Early on, the game does a poor job of incentivizing fighting the same monsters over and over. Your team doesn't have the skills yet to rank high enough to get worthwhile rewards, so every post battle screen is a disappointment. However, the game clearly expects you to do it anyway, because the enemy levels are regularly 3-4 higher than yours if you don't.

Around midgame, they introduce a mechanic that motivates grinding somewhat. The battles start getting a little more involved, but not overwhelming. Exploration opens up and it really feels like the game is getting into its groove. This is the best part of the game.

Then late game hits, and there's so much to grind for that it overtakes the fun parts of the game. The fights start demanding focused team setups, and you'll be swapping out monsters on a per fight basis. Then you have to get them leveled up, because benched monsters don't get exp. There's an item that boosts underleveled monsters up to party level, and the vast majority of your money will be going toward buying them if you want to retain your sanity. Then you have equipment, and grinding materials (from enemy drops) to make the equipment better. There's just so much setup, only to have to do all over it again for the next fight.

The interface is TERRIBLE for this, by the way. You have to go into each monsters skill tree to see their strengths/weaknesses, and you can't cycle through benched monsters with the shoulder buttons, so it's even more tedious than it sounds.

I'm trying to force myself to finish, because I'm so close to the end, but I just hit another roadblock duel that requires my to completely rebuild my team and I... just don't want to. I have 62 different monsters (and more in eggs that I don't want to hatch, it's bad enough already) to search through to find out which ones have the specific moves I need, and I don't want to have to use a wiki to make up for the poor UI.

A good game hampered by awful spongy boss fights that never end. Don't let that stop you from trying it though, the platforming and exploring are really fun.

pros:
its good
its humerus
(spoilers)
(more spoilers)

cons:
obvious dog bias
a few of the references are extremely heavy handed to the point of coming off as embarrassing nostalgia-bait

as you can see, there are more pros than cons. get this game

There's a reason they keep tacking sale achievements on this game. No one else would buy it otherwise, because it is not fun.
