1/2 of these Games is a Masterpiece. The other one... not so much... Sadly, you're forced to install both to play the good one, meaning this takes up a whopping 124gb of space.

Also Mouse input is completely and utterly broken on Steam Deck, despite being "verified". Whether it's a physical Mouse, touch screen, trackpad or gyro, nothing will work on Deck.

Very disappointed, I was really hoping this was going to be an upgrade, like Kao Round 2, with modern Resolutions, Achievements, and Controller Support, but this is sadly just the original release of the Game, the same port that's been on Good ol' Games for years. I had to use Steam Big Picture to map keyboard buttons to my controller.

That being said, it's still Kao, and I'm glad it's on Steam.

Very Cute, Short, and Easy little 3D Physics Platformer, with an adorable aesthetic, fun physics mechanics, funny dialogue, and diverse level design.

I beat the Game in a about 2 hours, would have been sooner, but that final level is terrible, and really brought the entire experience down a little for me. However the rest of the Game was really chill, and enjoyable. Probably a bit too short for the price, but worth a play if you like Cute, Physics-based, 3D Platformers. Especially good for younger children, but I'm 20-something, and I still really enjoyed most of it.

"10 years in the oven, and the Game still seems to have come out half baked."

Edit: This was how I opened my original review, however I neglected the fact that half baked food can still taste amazing! If that's the case, then this game is cookie dough. Would have been nice if it was baked long enough to become actual cookies, but the dough still tasted great! This also isn't a big pile of cookie dough, this is a plate of 11 different flavours of cookie, some better than others. The game prioritises quantity over quality. I usually prefer more polished, shorter games, but I admire Rob for not settling on making a short game, he wanted a 8-10 hour experience, and that's super respectable for a mostly solo dev.

I would say the first 2 levels really didn't set a good precedent. The first level is a homage to Andy's house in Toy Story 2, but it's WAY shorter, the level design is nonsense, and the music sucks. The next level wasn't great either, dark, moody, noisy, and dreary, not a great way to open your cartoony 3D Platforming game. Also both levels were filled with a lot of bugs, with poor performance. This really didn't give me a good first impression after playing for an hour, so I gave the game a bad review. However, after completing the Game, I feel bad I ever wrote that review, because there actually was a lot of really fun levels to explore, and finding all the collectables with the super fun movement mechanics was a blast. I'll go in to more depth below, but I would say if you like 3D Platformers, then this is a decent one at the least.

Levels:
Mixed bag, but most of them were decent. The Game boasts 11 unique Worlds, each with a classic free roaming stage, and a ""Boss"" stage. The main stages varied, but most of them were decent. The stand outs for me were Egypt, Medieval, Pirate, and China. The "Bosses" on the other hand were super under-whelming, janky, barely functioning, and forgettable. However most of these stages aren't even bosses, just harder platforming sections. The first one felt like a cool build up to a boss, but then there was no boss, which was very disappointing. That being said these more challenging platforming sections were some of the best in the game. The Greek Maze with the Bull, the Egyptian Pyramid ascent, The Wild West Train, and the Pirate Cove were all really fun, and memorable. The best traditional Boss was probably the final boss.

Movement:
Pretty damn good honestly. Clive n Wrench have an assortment of moves ripped directly from Rob's favourite 3D Platforming games. Spyro's charge, Mario's long jump, Rayman's hover, and more! You have a variety of different moves at your disposable, and which ones you chose are up to you. You could probably get through the whole game with just the double jump, and hover, but it's more fun to use the charge, and long jump. I wish the game had Mario's triple jump, I think it really would have felt right at home here. Not the best move-set ever, but the duo did feel super fun to control.

Combat:
Bad. Really bad. An Enemy will run at you, you'll hit the attack button, the enemy will hurt you without you knowing, and you will kill the enemy at the same time, the enemy will then shoot into the air at 50 mph, then come plummeting back down, and the rag-doll will freak out indefinitely, and dance all over the stage. I just summed up basically every combat encounter you will have in the game. In a well polished game like Spyro, enemies will have a nice death animation, then their bodies will disappear. That would have really helped here (also enemies bodies disappearing probably would have helped with poor performance Rob). I like that enemies have those cartoonish rotating stars above their rag-doll heads, to show they're knocked out, but I wish the rag-doll animations weren't so violent, and broken. The worst part is there is no real impact from enemy attacks, no knockdown animation, no invincibility frames, just Clive's brief "Ah!" sound. The controller will vibrate when you get hit... but it also vibrates when you hit an enemy, so you really won't even know you lost health unless you look at your health bar. Luckily combat features very little in the game, so it's not a huge issue.

Sound:
Horrible. Music might be some of the worst music I've heard in a 3D Platforming Game. It was all so loud, brash, and obnoxious. Most of it just felt like a cacophony of noise made by somebody that had no real grasp of musical theory, and just learned how to compose music with software that week! Most of it just felt like random notes thrown together with no real purpose, or melody. The best piece of music was Clive n Wrench's theme. It's not brilliant, but it was memorable at the least. I did like how their theme was played in the sound style of each world, that was probably the best the music ever got. At worst, I actually turned the music off, and listened to better platformer music on YouTube while I played.
Sound design is also pretty bad. The main collectable, the pocket watch, has a HORRIBLE pickup sound, which makes picking up hundreds of them feel like a chore on the ears, which is not something I've ever said before. Footsteps were inconsistent, and didn't sound like the terrain it was supposed to be, for example, walking on snow sounds more like walking on wood. Not good.

Graphics:
Game looks mid, and runs bad. I can accept bad graphics if the game runs well, and I can accept poor performance if the game looks nice, but looking bad, and running bad, is... bad. The game can look good in the moment, the lighting is pretty, the art style is nice, the textures are all adequate, but the models really look a bit too inspired by those classic N64 games. They're very low poly, and some are straight up ugly. Clive n Wrench themselves really should have had nicer models. The animations are also terrible. Cutscenes are super stiff, go on way too long, and overall have the same feel as a first year 3D Animation project. I say that as somebody that spent 2 years studying 3D Animation at college, so I've seen amateur 3D Animation, and this game has it. The in-game animations on the other hand, are all smooth, fluent, springy, and full of life, which is very odd. Feels like 2 completely different animators did the in-game, and cutscene animations, although I don't know if this is the case.

Bugs:
There were a lot of bugs. I listed a few in my original review, and yes I encountered a lot more in my entire playthrough. The worst was a ledge grab glitch that left me stuck in midair, with no way out, requiring a complete restart of the stage. This happened to me twice, in 2 different stages. It has since however been patched. There has only been one patch since the time of posting this updated review, it fixed a small handful of bugs, that was about it. I would love to see Rob continue to work on this, patching bugs, listening to feedback, and improving where the game is lacking.

Conclusion:
I had fun. I didn't 100% the Game, but I did 100% 9/11 of the levels, and beat the final boss. You know what? I had a good time for most of it. Sure some of the bosses were jank, the combat was terrible, the music hurt my ears, the sound design sucked, the graphics could have been better, and the performance should have been better... but most of the levels were designed well, and the controlling Clive n Wrench through them all was super fun, and in a 3D Platforming game, fun levels and movement are the most important parts. It's not a solid recommendation, I would say you should only play this if you love the genre, and this isn't the best place to start. But if you've played the old classics, the new classic, and are looking for something else, or you just want to support a single dev that spent 10 years making his dream game, then give Clive n Wrench a shot. Better to support Rob, than any of the big evil AAA Publishers out there... Hopefully we can get Clive n Wrench 2 one day.

The game doesn't force me to use Origin, or whatever terrible launcher EA use now, so it's an instant recommendation from me. Take notes Ubisoft.
