Borderlands + DOOM Eternal x Megaman ÷ Gunfire Reborn = Roboquest

Genuinely my favourite Rougelite FPS I've ever played, soundtrack is worth it alone. Constant updates mean there's always reason to check the game out again every few months. It really is a solid game, I hope it gets more attention, it deserves it.

Got all the Achievements in 6 minutes by mashing the click button on everything. If you want to boost your overall achievements rating, then this is good. Maybe the story is good too though, I don't know.

Serious Sam 4 is a GOOD game, that I don’t think was actually finished. Croteam created a HUGE problem, by giving broken review copies to reviewers, then fixing MOST of the problems the reviewers talked about in the day one patch. So all the reviews were pretty much outdated as soon as the game came out. That being said, it’s still buggy as all hell, and suffers from a lot of technical issues.
I played this game for over 15 hours, and THE GAME DID NOT CRASH ONCE. I heard reviewers talk about crashes, and I needed to make that clear. This is not the game that reviewers played. They played an older, jankier build.

Gameplay:
The gun combat here is the BEST IT’S EVER BEEN. There are a TON OF GUNS here, and almost all of them are really satisfying to use. The new shotgun feels great, the double barrel shotgun is SUPER SATISFYING to use, really punchy, and fast reloading, up there with DOOM’s Super Shotgun. Basically every gun has an alt fire, and they are mostly better than the standard guns. Shotgun has a grenade launcher, Rocket Launcher can fire 5 rockets at one time, and the Lazer Gun’s DEATH RAY is OP AS HELL, melts everything in seconds, I LOVE IT. The Sniper rifle is the worst it’s been, inaccurate without aiming, and using the scope drops the framerate to below 30 in some levels, which makes aiming really hard. DUAL WIELDING is awesome, and almost necessary for some levels. It’s worth playing for the gun combat alone, gibbing Gnars with the Coach Gun is so satisfying, it’s addictive

There is a RPG leveling system which is actually pretty cool, allowing you to dual wield any guns you want, and even do insane stuff like riding werebulls. The upgrade points are hidden I think, I only found like 9 in the whole game. I wish there were a map to find them all, like in DOOM Eternal. There are also ‘side missions’ to unlock new gadgets, which are worth it. The side missions pretty much all include just going to a big arena, and killing hundreds of enemies, so it’s just more of the base game. These gadgets are awesome, ranging from a grenade that makes black holes, to a mini nuke. Some of the most memorable battles in the game were in the side missions. I haven’t tried co-op yet, but I’ve heard the game is more fun in co-op, which I’m sure it is. Some levels have you accompanied by NPC characters, which people seem to think is bad for some reason? They have infinite ammo, can’t be killed, and will follow you around, and help you kill enemies, so what exactly is the problem? There are also some vehicle sections. They’re ok. There aren’t many of them, and they don’t last long. They got nothing on the vehicles from SS2 which were awesome. I like the mech sections, they were fun.

Level Design:
I would say the level design is better than SS3, which is DEFINITELY a positive. No more getting lost in a cul de sac of identical, dusty brown buildings. However, they’re not as good as other Sam games. Levels a HUGE, but feel EMPTY. I drove down a road for 5 minutes in the France level, thinking I was going to find a secret, but found a DEAD END. I kept wandering around the castle level looking for secrets, but finding dead ends. It feels like I’m running around a perfect recreation of a real world location, rather than a curated area designed for gameplay. Why let me run down a dead end for 2 minutes? Either close it off, or at least put a secret at the end. There are some fun arenas though, they aren’t as tightly designed as DOOM’s arenas, but some are pretty cool. The game is definitely more varied than TFE, and SS3:BFE. You go from Rome, to the Vatican, to Versovious, to rural France, to an old French Castle. Secrets suck just like in SS3. There were 2 secret boss fights I found, but most secrets are just a gadget up high somewhere, and you have to jump around on janky ledges trying to find a way to get to it. It sucks.
Overall, level design is a mixed bag I’d say. Serviceable, but could be a LOT better

Graphics:
Ok, so the graphics suck. I think their new Serious engine is just jank, and unfinished. This is somehow the UGLIEST, and the BEST the series has looked. Some sections look photorealistic. Stuff like cliffs, roads, and castles were scanned IRL, and it’s apparent, this game can look BEAUTIFUL… in screenshots. In motion, the shadows seem broken, janky lines, and jittery textures abound. Leaves on trees will flicker constantly, as the shadows on them dance around. Anti-aliasing is ATROCIOUS, even on the highest setting it’s still awful, and will tank your FPS. Character models are UGLY, and the animations are even worse. Specifically the characters all have dead eyes, and stiff animations. They used a new form of motion capture that they developed themselves, to be used with an iPhone, which is actually kind of impressive. However I don’t think they tweaked the animations afterwards enough, and everything just looks awkward, and unnatural. Most cutscenes are just shot, reverse shot of characters speaking, except every time they cut, all the textures slowly pop back in, which is VERY distracting. Croteam are a SMALL INDIE TEAM. This isn’t a triple AAA studio, and this isn’t a £60 game. I think Croteam only has 40 devs, and the game only costs £30. I can totally forgive jank graphics, as long as the gameplay is good, which it is.

Story:
The Story sucks, writing is cringy, and unfunny, with loads of terrible puns. I don’t want to drag on, and I’m not really a ‘story’ kind of guy. You can skip these cutscenes, you won’t miss much. Others have talked more about how bad the story is, I didn’t hate it that much. Some of the lines made me chuckle, and one moment made me feel like… thinking about... feeling some kind of emotion? ...I know what Croteam were AIMING for, but I don’t think they achieved what they wanted. The worst thing I can say about this story is that I’ve seen better writing, and dialogue in mods for SS3. It feels like a Serious Sam Mod actually, it doesn’t feel like a real game. Skip the cutscenes if you want, but don’t let it put you off the game.

Recommendation:
Should you buy this game?
Short Answer: Yes.
Long Answer: It depends, but probably.
I think Croteam had to release this game now, for whatever reason, but I don’t know if they’re finished working on it though. I can only hope that they continue to optimise the engine, and fix all the graphical issues.
If you like Serious Sam, this is a no brainer, buy it, support Croteam, and hopefully we can get a Serious Sam 5 in the future. This game is worth £30, hands down. If you haven’t played a Serious Sam game, then I recommend playing Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter, it’s probably the best in the series. If you like that, then get this game. If you don’t like Serious Sam, then you probably won’t like this. Also if you have a low tolerance for bugs, bad graphics, and crap writing, then maybe you won’t be able to look past this game’s flaws, but if you can appreciate a game for it’s core gameplay, then Serious Sam 4 is a great FPS, which I can only hope isn’t the final entry in the franchise.

Thanks for everything Croteam, I hope everything works out for you, and I hope to see more Sam in the future!
I’ll end with my rankings for the Serious Sam Games.

1: Serious Sam: The Second Encounter
2: Serious Sam: The Next Encounter (please port this to PC Croteam)
3: Serious Sam 4
4: Serious Sam: The First Encounter
5: Serious Sam 2
6: Serious Sam: BFE

Edit: So they added a new map, fixed the FOV issues I was having, and added trading cards. These are all great additions, and show the devs are working hard to make this game better. Just today they added full controller rebinding which is great. The new map they added was as good as the rest of the base maps, and the trading cards are nice. Since they fixed the FOV issues I was having, I played a bit of Survival mode, and it was actually really fun. I like this game a lot, but I just can't recommend it at full price. If it's on sale, or you've got a lot of money, and don't care about price, then you'll get a fun 3 hour afternoon out of this game. However if you've got $10 to spend on a retro FPS game, buy Prodeus, it has workshop support, and you'll definitely get your moneys worth out of that.

I'll keep an eye on this game, and edit my review from time to time. I hope one day they'll add enough new levels, or workshop support, and I'll feel this game is worth a recommendation. Until then, I'd say it's a decent game, but there's better games out there to play at this same price range. These devs seem cool though, so if you wanna support them, then give it a buy, but just don't expect to get a lot of playtime out of this game.

Original Review: 6 maps? I beat this game in 2 hours, It was a really fun 2 hours, but £10 for a 2 hour game? It wants to be an "old school FPS" but just ends up feeling like a shareware game, I feel like I just played the first episode, where is the rest of the content!? It stopped just when it started to get really fun! I've been looking forward to this for like 2 years, and I beat it in 2 hours. Disappointing to say the least.

There are some annoying bugs too, FOV kept resetting every time I died, or loaded a level, and didn't change AT ALL in Survival mode. That made Survival mode unplayable for me, the FOV was locked at 65, it's so low, it makes me feel physically sick. Some MASSIVE frame drops, in a game that really isn't that graphically intensive. The time resets if you load a save, so you could save just before the end of a level, load the save, and the game would think you beat the level in under 1 second. A good exploit, except there is no achievements so who cares? Also, no achievements, no trading cards, no workshop support, really? Very underwhelming.

There are 4 guns, 6 maps, and 1 boss. Love the standard rifle, let's you shoot really fast, triple shotgun is awesome, very punchy, the minigun feels OP, and the rocket launcher is also there. Movement is fun, bunny hopping feels great. Maps are good, loads of secrets, don't think I found any that actually technically were 'secrets' but that might be the game bugging, because I died after finding them. Some moments felt like old school Doom, one segment reminded me of the ending of Serious Sam: TSE, it gets the feel of the retro fps right. The maps are good but some are way too short, there just aren't enough of them. Enemies are good, the main soldiers are fun to kill, the big monsters from the first live action Scooby-Doo Movie are great. I really disliked the melee enemy, it chases you, and can kill you in 1-2 hits (on hard mode), and is just kind of annoying to deal with. It has the same sound effects as Scooby-Doo Movie monster. It makes it hard to tell if the 'one hit kill' monster is nearby, or just a standard Scooby-Doo monster. Also the final boss was meh, and his strongest attack was to lower my frame rate to sub 30.
Edit: Oh also the OST is great, fast paced metal tracks, exactly what you want from an old school FPS.

I think I'm eligible for a refund, and I'm considering it. I got 2 weeks to decide. If the devs fix the bugs, add achievements, trading cards, and/or workshop support, then maybe I'll keep it. The 2 hours I spent with this game were fun, but I just can't justify the price. If you can pick this game up for £5 in sale, then go for it, but 2 hours is too short, and I took my time with it. This game DESPERATELY needs a level editor, the mechanics, the guns, the enemies are all good, just not enough to play. I would have been satisfied with 12 maps maybe.

Hopefully the devs add to this, and I can take this review down. I really don't want to be negative.

This seems like a college project made by one guy.. If that IS the case, then I'd give this a B+.
Cute, short, does everything it needs to. Here's some things to fix to get an A+ for this college project.
The looping song is horrible. Why can things hurt me, when I don't lose health? There is a glitch in every single level, that for some reason, gave me infinite jumps, which breaks the game completely.

Took me an hour to beat, I really enjoyed the last level, but then the glitch kicked in, and I just flew to the top.
Don't regret playing it though. It was ok.
If this is a first year college project, then it's pretty good, but if this is what you made for your Master's Degree, then I'd give it an F.

Not bad, if you're bored, and wanna play something new for an hour, without paying for it, this is ok.
