I'll start off my review with a simple sentence: I enjoy Paladins.

That being said, it definitely has it's flaws.

The thing I like about it is that it's F2P...mostly. You can use real currency to unlock things, but you can also use an in game currency to buy characters if you play long and hard enough. And there are even ways to earn real currency in game.

Speaking of which, the characters. There are a lot of them. It's unfortunate that you have to unlock them, but hey, not everybody is valve and can have stuff be f2p and run a game entirely on cosmetics. It's either that or charge 60 dollars for the game, like Blizzard.

With that being said, this game is not just an OW or TF2 clone. Sure, there are similarities between the two, but there are always similarities between games of the same genre. Look at LoL, Dota 2, HotS, and now Smite. Look at pretty much any RTS game out there. You can sit there and pick out everything that is similar, or exactly the same, but you can also sit there and pick out the differences as well.

Speaking of differences, one of the biggest differences between TF2 and OW is also one of the games biggest flaws; the lack of an option to change characters mid game. Sometimes team compositions can suck, and you're left with 3 damage dealers, a flank, and an ill suited support. But once you make your champion selection, after the time counts down, you're locked in. This leads me to my next criticism.

The community. Most people are stubborn and won't switch their character over to a needed character, even with the situation demands it. So if you're on a support char, and you tell a damage picker to switch to front line before the game starts, you'll most likely be told to switch yourself, even though your position is more necessary than theirs is. I know communities can be bad in any game, but since this is a game that is heavily team focused, having a stubborn community isn't helpful.

The characters might be very varied, but at the same time, they're not perfect. There are some that are clearly underpowered, and some that are clearly overpowered. However, rather than balance the characters, Hi-Rez's focus seems to be on making new characters, which only helps the power creep build, as the new characters will either be stronger, or weaker, than the current meta leaders. And if a character isn't a meta leader, it's probably not going to get played anyway.

But overall, the game is fun. There's really no penalty to loss (Ranked is currently a joke right now, but it's beta), and the matches normally don't take too long. It's a good f2p counter to OW, for anyone that likes more characters than tf2, rather than weapon customization and hats.
