As a Sci-fi buff, I couldn't help but enjoy this for the story, but I feel like the puzzles are worth the time as well, using different nodes in various ways, including logic input/output series. Each chapter is well punctuated with bits of story and progression, finding different parts of the outpost and seeing how people lived to an extent, all while debating soft philosophy with your partner AI. I can't really get into much more without spoilers, but honestly, I would suggest this game for the semi-thought provoking story and refined puzzle mechanics.

Early Access Review
All together I enjoy this game, I want to make that clear. However I believe it to be inaccessible. This is contrary to my normal beliefs, I do not advocate games that simply allow the player to win without trying, that give regen while in cover, with very few exceptions, like "Vanquish", your healthpool is miniscule and plenty of attacks can oneshot you so I don't mind the regen there, however in Ultrakill, you're just gonna die. It doesn't matter what your skill level is, it doesn't matter that you can use a hitscan, instant headshot mechanic, there are simply brick walls in progression with absolutely no intuitive adaptation method. Plenty of bosses are simple, read the pathing, shoot, I understand this, they can even be fun, but even as a fan of shooters the dichotomy of difficulty even between the hidden dual boss in the second act, and "V2" is something well past what I would personally consider good game design. Narratively its interesting, a good choice even, however I believe giving V2 the exact same loadout and basically guaranteeing it attacks that deal 1/3 of player health and almost no way to viably regenerate health, yes even with the punch, on top of being borderline insanity to read, puts V2 on the list of "Gaming Design Sins" in the great tome of mistakes developers make. Yes. I stopped at V2. Frankly I enjoyed the game up until that point and even considered turning up the difficulty level above normal, it was fun punching things and dodging around, however, the guise of enjoyment was shattered much like the stained glass window V2 hopped through. I do realise this is technically an incomplete review, but honestly, I refuse to look up a guide on how to beat a single boss in a game that believes it is so easy to understand it does almost nothing to assist the player past the basic controls (not a downside despite how it sounds).

If you enjoy frustration and progression walls more intense than those found in RPG's from the 90's, then buy this game. Otherwise, don't. Anyone tagged as casual should probably stay away from this.

Honestly, this is a great game. I'm saddened by the fact that so many people seem to have passed it over. The graphics are good, the universe is relatively rich for the genre its in, and the unique kind of humour Coffee Stain puts in their games is present here too, so that's a bonus. I give it an easy 8-9/10
