This review will be prefaced with the fact I had yet to play a Mega Man or Mega Man X game before playing this game. I have played this game for nearly 30 hours, and despite all of the great times I have had with it I always end up feeling dissapointed. 20XX has left me more conflicted looking back on it, as it is a great game that I don't think I'll ever finish, which is a bit disheartening. This game is brutally difficult, which wouldn't be a problem except for the fact that even on the lowest difficulty it still feels impossible. When you finally get past the bosses, you go through two final tough as nails stages. I have only gotten to the last level once, and on any other run I get past the regular bosses I am unable to complete any of the platforming. Oftentimes bad procedural generation makes it a more viable strategy to just try to plow through the levels taking huge amounts of damage and ignoring the platforming. I would like to think I have gotten pretty good at the controls, which feel great, but some of the platforming demands far too much as the levels get faster and faster to the point at which you can't even comprehend what is happening. Actually fighting the enemies feel great, and I'm not opposed to some platforming challenges, but when the platforming takes center stage over the enemies in a game like this, it feels quite odd. The art style of the game looks great to me, I like the early flash game aesthetic as it feels unique in a swarm of sprite based indie games all attempting to replicate a 16-bit aesthetic. The bosses are all fun and unique and feel great to slowly learn how to take them down. The characters are all unique, even if the DLC characters leave a bit to be desired. I feel terrible not recommending this game with how buttery smooth the controls of the character are, and how intriguing the concept is. The procedural generation is interesting but overall feels uneccessary because as you play long enough all the chunks start to blend together, and I would rather slowly master the levels as some of the early Mega Man games. Maybe if the procedural generation improves my opinion will change, but overall this game's procedural generation feels half baked when compared to games like Streets of Rogue. Hopefully 30XX will improve on these issues, even if I prefer the art style of the first game. This sequel could be truly great if it offered more difficult options, improved on the procedural generation, and deemphasized platforming.

This game brings good ideas to the table, yet it fails in the execution. This game could be a more simplified version of a Paradox game all my friends could enjoy, but it manages to be too tedious and simple, even for a simplified version of a Paradox game. The main problem of this game, one that is supposed to span millenia is that technology does not feel like it progresses over centuries. It takes you out of the immersion when you are still building castles in the modern world, and the fact that there is only one unit type makes the game grow stale very quickly. I'm not asking for too many different types of units, but horses during the fuedal age and tanks from WWI on would be nice. Managing buildings in this game is tedious yet also too simplified. This game most importantly lacks multiplayer which is essential to a simple grand strategy game like this one outside of local coop which feels out of place in a game like this one. This games price point would be perfect if a lot of things were improved. This game certainly has potential, but many things have to be improved and added before I could recommend it to a friend.

It's a shame it came out after the Game Awards, because it would've won game of the year.
