TL;DR:

Pros:
+Looks great
+Lots of cars
+Plenty of places to drive
+Interesting setting/seasonal change mechanic

Cons:
-Poorly balanced AI
-No qualifying in single player (you usually start last to prop up AI that can't overtake)
-Loading time bug making major part of online game unplayable
-Not much reason to try most cars
-Many cars unlocked by RNG
-No rear view mirror in bumper/hood cam
-Tracks get repetitive
-Delisted
-No more live service features

================
Full Review:

While the game is fairly fun... there are some massive game design holes, meaning the most unfun part of this game is... the racing, which is kind of an important part. It seems whoever was in charge of how races work really phoned it in with the most basic experience you can get.

Plus now the game has been delisted (not before a final discount to lure people in to the sinking ship) the live service festival playlist (possibly the most interesting part of the game) is no longer going to be updated... they aren't even just letting it randomly generate new events forever more, or looping old content, just turning it off, great!

So yeah, while it is a great looking game, and is fun to drive around, the content gets pretty burned out quickly.

Other notable issues:

- AI difficulty that scales via rubberbanding (Rather than drive better, they will just get unrealistic performance boosts, not to mention once they are far enough ahead they no longer get slowed down by breaking through walls and other debris, not leaving a hole for you to pass through, making catching up more difficult as you have to smash them yourself), I recommend only setting the AI as high as "highly skilled " as anything above that is just a chore, and doesn't really offer much outside of a few live service events (ended) and a few extra credits.

- Always start at the back of the pack in single player, leaving you to get through the melee while the boosted AI speeds off (presumably there is no qualifying as the AI can't overtake so, starting first would have no competition, though that would be better if the only competition is from these bargain bin AI)

- 30min loading times for online adventure races (despite the name, these are just regular PVP races, it's due to a known cross platform bug with MS store, which has never been fixed)

- No reason to invest in more than a handful of cars (Most races you can just take the same car into, so unless you force yourself to try something new, it can get very repetitive, feels like there could have been much more effort from game designers to regularly encourage you to try something new)

- Tedious RNG car unlocks (Also bogged down by a high chance to unlock clothing or cash instead)

- No rear view mirror in bumper/hood cam (even though in the cockpit cams there are working mirrors)

- Checkpoint system is lacklustre (super easy to miss checkpoints, and it's often hard to see where the next one is, especially if you use bumper/hood cams)

- The tracks often feel very similar, as they are mostly just random checkpoints scattered across similar feeling roads with some random barriers and stuff thrown in to jazz it up

- The best way to beat the AI is to just slam into the leader on corners, though this could be a pro as it's quite fun, and then you can just block them/rewind if they try to overtake. (Even though anti-troll mechanics exist when racing vs humans, which will slow you down for smashing into walls, or ghost you if it thinks you're going to ram someone)

-If doing an event, and during the after race flow you accidentally click 'retry' (for instance if you check your score on the leaderboard and press the button to back out twice instead of once, your progress will not be saved, even though your leaderboard entry will persist, not to mention it takes 10x longer to load retrying from the results screen than retrying mid event.

-Coming out of photo mode your controls are locked for a second or so (not good for high speed photos)

-cant pause the game during the race intro, have to wait till after the green light.

-The markers for drift/speed zones can be destroyed, often leaving no marker for where the zone ends, which can make it tricky to see where the objective is

So in conclusion, there are large parts of a decent game here, but also large holes in that too, so you might have a decent time, you might have a frustrating time... the game is best enjoyed casually because anything else is going to throw up issues.

If you like battlefield, Sci-fi, and huge battles, you will likely enjoy this game.

PS2 takes place on huge maps, with 3 teams fighting over capture points. There are many different ways to approach them, solo, as a group, in a tank, car or truck, in a plane, on foot, in power armour, or you can build your own base nearby to reinforce your push.
There isn't much to stop you from playing the way you want, I personally prefer driving a Vanu Magrider tank, which is a lot of fun, but am happy to get out and fight indoors too, and do enjoy building my own bases.

The balance is pretty good, the game is free to play with most of the pay-for items being customisation or side-grades, with all weapons being unlockable by playing for free, even though you can be competitive with a new character in alot of situations.

A lot of new stuff has been added since I started playing in 2012, and there isn't really anything that really compares with the scale of this even today a decade later.

Lastly, imo, the most important thing to learn as a new player is where to find a good fight, I recommend looking on the map for locations where the current population is split between your own faction and opponents.

Definitely worth a go for free.

One of the most creative games out there. There is a fair learning curve to using some of the tools and functions, but if you stick with it and you get the hang of it you can create almost anything you want, with mods and addons that only further enable your creativity. Playing this back in the late 2000's, writing code for stuff in game via Expression 2 got me into programming for which I now (genuinely) have a degree and job in, and I made many friends in game who I have stuck with for years now.

If the endless nature of the sandbox is a bit daunting or overwhelming, there are plenty of other game modes on offer too, I played countless hours of deathrun, with some bunnyhopping on the side, good fun.

Some of the game design decisions reek of inexperience, feels like some of the designers haven't played a video game before - let alone a Battlefield Video game.

Though I often find myself back playing this, craving the few nuggets of good gameplay that can actually be found in it... albeit I am frequently reminded why I put this review as not recommended.
The frustration from some of the very simple and blindingly obvious issues with the game are enough to cause me physical pain.

Fun game and idea.
Unfortunately there's a few bad points... firstly the most fun is had when you have alot of different parts to use when crafting your vehicle... but to get more than a few of them requires literally years of grinding, or as in many games these days... you can pay them to get coins to skip the grind that they created... not to mention the packs that are pretty expensive too, but you will begin to feel that they are worth it with the amount of grind you have been doing otherwise.

Often it seems the priority for development is the introduction of new packs to sell rather than making the game more enjoyable or adding more features, or fixing bugs, probably down to pressure from the publisher, but that's how it is.

The matchmaking leaves alot to be desired, as it is only based on 'power score' of parts - an number given to your vehicle based on the parts you have added to it, though this makes team composition feel arbitrary and often a diceroll... as your team can be made of a set of build types that will very much not work well together, and usually don't, leaving you feeling like you just wasted 5 minutes. The devs have had a very long time now to rethink it, and the benefits would be huge, but it's just not a priority, if the base game works... may as well just make more stuff to sell, or introduce more mechanics to slow down the players progress - like an extra step to crafting that requires this fun new resource that someone has to collect, its frustrating with how fun the game can sometimes be.

I could keep going on about all the things wrong with the game, but frankly I'm tired of it, and they are probably either more nuanced or more subjective... or just boring, so I will stop here...

So TL;DR... potentially a fun game, but kneecapped by excessive grind designed to encourage you to spend, which seems to distract the devs from making the game better.

TL;DR: Tries to get people addicted, and you will need to play like one to be competitive.

It can be fun, there was good intentions of a sandbox MMO, though these days, profit seems to be on the top of the agenda for the owners, which unfortunately is becoming more and more obvious and harder to escape, with them regularly trying to play psychologist and keep the playerbase addicted with FOMO and constantly changing the goalposts. Here's a few points of note:

PVP: It can be fun in this game, best if teams are balanced with similar equipment, player numbers and levels... however those few times where that is the case leave you chasing the high in futility through numerous unbalanced encounters, if you aren't already at the bleeding edge of grind, be prepared to be mowed down or just not involved unless you invest months of grind to try and catch up, but the trick is you cant catch up as the level cap is exponential, once you reach about ancestral 36, each level after will take an order of magnitude longer... with the highest levels being ancestral 40-42 at the time of writing this. This helps give the appearance that the top levels are still within reach. They are not, they have thousands of hours more time invested and it directly affects their effectiveness in fights with gearscore being so important in pvp.

PVE: Can be fun, though once you have grinded enough to try and catch up with other players so you can join them in the newer content (where most of the playerbase resides) you will largely have seen it all, with the game forever asking you to repeat yourself to fuel your journey, with daily tasks keeping you busy, but repeating yourself to basically stand still.

Equipment: This is one of the most bare faced time sinks for the sake of profit I have ever experienced... there are arbitrary costs and chances on everything, with many opportunities to outright ruin your stuff, with each failed attempt leaving you to grind some more and then retry, this makes it very hard for newer players to catch up unless they play 24/7... and even if they do, they wont ever catch the leaders.

Sandbox: The sandbox aspect becomes pretty kneecapped if you aren't a subscriber as almost every action requires 'labor' a resource that recharges slowly when you are online (faster and offline too when subscribed) this very much limits what you can do each day. This feels like an arbitrary attempt to keep the economy balanced, or rather, to stop you from making too much money, along with the fact that it takes 8 hours to get paid from a trade pack delivery really means you very often reach a point where you literally are out of money and labor and cant do anything else, apart from maybe go grind (which tries to keep you interested in gear etc).

Limited bag space: Extra storage space can be achieved with a house, though this requires a paid subscription and a house to place chests in, which must be topped up with resources or it will be destroyed with all of the things inside of it, which forces you to keep playing or lose a large investment, there are so many random items in the game that will very very quickly fill your bag, to convince you that you need to expand.

Cash shop: This is largely just an exercise in lootboxes and overpricing. There seems to be numerous attempts to separate new players from their real money too, with commonly available items listed for real money.

Controversial changes not included in patch notes: Sometimes you will be in game trying to do something you usually do, and it wont be possible wondering if you found a bug or asking 'when did this change?' because all too often the devs seem to actively leave some changes off the patch notes rather than suffer a backlash, letting players find out at isolated times lessening the strength of their rebuttal.

Boats + Cars: The game has boats and cars, they are fun, but require so much investment to make.

Events: They used to be fun, nowadays they are just repeats with no new content and reduced rewards for the same grind.

Conclusion: You can have some fun with the game, so long as you don't let it dominate you... it's so easy to get addicted to this game, and it will happily feed that addiction at your expense. If you are easily addicted, I would strongly recommend to avoid this game.
