My first impressions of this game were that it was bad, but I wanted to dig down and really try to see what I enjoyed about it over Warband. There is very little that is improved and in fact mechanics that make SO MUCH SENSE in Warband are outright subverted for absolute stupidity. The leveling system in Warband is much better and far less convoluted, but even without jumping into something so technical something as simple as weapon swapping in combat has been absolutely ruined. I got into a hideout fight and forgot to swap to my melee weapon and shield combo, so I think to myself this is okay I'll just grab a weapon/shield from the sea raiders no problem, right? Wrong, the moment I switch to a shield it drops my bow rather than one of my 2 quivers... on top of that the bow didn't drop from my hand to the ground, but vanished entirely from the instance dooming me to fight without my bow. I never had something so stupid happen in Warband, but to add insult to injury when I decided to grab some throwing weapons for a new method of ranged attack the game decided to drop my melee weapon instead of one of my 2 quivers... So now I have no melee weapon, no bow, but a shield with a limited amount of javelins and 2 quivers full of arrows. All of this on top of the fact that the melee combat feels too fast and flimsy to make me feel like I'm playing M&B. I dunno I wanted to like this game and there are a couple of things about it that are better than Warband, but overall this game is a severe disappointment. Maybe they can fix it to what I would consider a more reasonable experience, but it has a LONG way to go to even stand in the shadow of Warband.

Amazing 9/10 game. With some slightly better features and mechanics, a good multiplayer campaign, and some bug fixes it could be 10/10. Might be the best game I've ever played. We'll see if Bannerlord can address these problems and make this the greatest franchise ever.

I really want to play the new one, but I'm not worthy of the honor. Also, I haven't even exhausted a fraction of the potential enjoyment I could get out of this game. Nothing comes close to this game. I can't find pleasure in anything else in my life anymore. Sometimes I leave it running just so everyone will know how cool it is.

How this game can have so many positive reviews with so many glaring problems with the multiplayer is beyond me. Every time I try to play it with a friend I come back to the realization of why I hate it so much. Constant reloading, freezing, crashing make this game an absolute catastrophe. This isn't even taking into account the shallow poorly thought out game mechanics that are clearly inferior to it's predecessor civ4. Poorly thought out unit maintenance where 1 great person takes the same amount of gold to maintain as a military unit. Or work boats costing upkeep until they are placed on a resource. This wouldn't be nearly as frustrating if there were better ways to make money than caravans that will blindly stumble into barbarians. Even trying to escort them is a massive pain in the ass sometimes. Not to mention the ridiculously rigid 1 unit per tile nonsense. I get that people don't like stacks of doom, but there were mechanics in 4 to counter large stacks (collateral damage). They could've made it so you can have more than 1 unit per tile but there would be penalties such as reduced unit fighting power, or units taken damage from being unable to forage enough food or something. Instead the game took a heavy handed approach by just completely forbidding it.

All in all I can't suggest anyone buy this game. Whether it's the buggy multiplayer or poor game design I am always reminded when I play it why I prefer civilization 4 to it so much.

I'll start by saying that this is not a game for casuals, if you want to have a game that is incredibly compelling and complex and rewarding to learn, this is your game. While Civ 3 remains a complete mystery to me, I can say I have played all the others, and this one is by far the best I've played. You might say "what about Civ 5?", but I highly prefer it to Civ 5 for several reasons (unit stacking ***Figure out how to use collateral damage people***, tech/espionage/culture slider, much more micromanagable empire, better system for unit and city maintenance, far superior espionage system, more interesting promotion dynamics with military units, unrestricted leaders, non gimmicky leader traits, non gimmicky religions, far superior map options, way less annoying barbarians, way less buggy multiplayer, etc etc etc...)

I have dumped hundreds of hours into this game on steam (untold hundreds more on my non steam copy) multiplayer on the steam servers just last year and still have no fatigue of this game. The replay value is incredible and you can even find interesting strategies with unrestricted leaders. If you like Civ 5, and have never played Civ 4 BtS, and want to take your Civ experience to the next level, I highly recommend this game for you. It can be overwhelming at first, I know, but give it time, it's a seriously good game.
