Perpetuum has always been something of a lesser known & underrated game. Even though the old official server is no longer running, the Open-Perpetuum community project has done well to keep perpetuum online and replace and improve on features, mechanics, balancing & other things from the old server & keep perpetuum kickin in general.

The game itself graphics wise is dated but gets the job done. The game has one of the most satisfying and enjoyable combat systems for PvP in its genre with the use of terrain & this applies to all combat in the game.

It has a solid & robust system for industry and production that goes side-by-side with with a fully player driven market and economy. As for gear, theres different tier levels of equipment and robots that all have their own different traits, strengths, and weaknesses and get better overall the higher the tier level.

Currently there are "alpha islands" which are entirely safe places for people who want to explore, do missions, industry, PvE, etc. While there are "beta islands" which serve as PvP areas which most notably have outposts that can be controlled by player groups that give benefits, bonuses and other cool things to the groups that control them. These areas also have allow you to make money & material more efficiently with exploration, missioning, industry, & so on as well as giving you access to more resource types as long as you are willing to take the risk of traveling into dangerous player controlled territory.

There also used to be "Gamma Islands" which allowed you to terraform terrain and build player-controlled bases with automated turrets and all kinds of cool stuff! From my understanding it is planned for them to make a return under a more polished iteration at some point down the line in the open perpetuum project.

The game has a time based skill leveling system where you earn 1440 "extension points" per day that you can spend to gain the ability to pilot bigger and better robots & use higher tier modules as well as improve your capabilities with them as well as other things like improving skills in industry, mining, harvesting, relations which give you bigger mission rewards, etc etc.
You can also earn EP from the activities you do ingame allowing you to gain tons of EP on top of the daily 1440, that way even if your a new player, you can catch up to older players quickly and make yourself more capable of using bots and modules well amongst other things.

As for factions, there are about 5 different factions within the game and its lore that each have their own bots with different weapon types and traits:

- The Nuimqol which are designed as speedy high damage robots which focus more on armor repairing over resistance and buffer tanking. They use Magnetic weapons such as EM & Gauss guns.

- The Thelodica are slower platforms which have laser based weapons that do less damage per volley but fire at a faster rate & focus on having high resistance to damage types unlike the nuimqol. They use short ranged lasers called LCL & long ranged lasers called HCL!

- The pelistal Are a unique mobile platform that fires missiles at enemies from a distance & utilize shield generators that can be hardened to increase their tanking capacity, they have one weapon type but two very different ammo types for close range and long range.

- The Syndicate is the entity behind the perpetuum project in the lore & they created bots from the salvage and wreckage of the other Nian factions. Their bots utilize human made firearm weapons which have a extremely high rate of fire & a high falloff range for them. Thet utilize evasive tanking by making smaller surface hit sizes on their bots, making it harder for larger weapons to hit them and allowing them to outright not get hit in some cases.

- The Nian Industrial Trust serves is the industrial faction which focuses on transportation and resource gathering, by default they are not meant for combat but have been known to serve logistical roles such as energy transfering, remote armor repairing & boosting sensor strength of robots in support roles in PvE and PvP. They usually utilize shields to protect themselves.

The lack of major population due to a lack of advertisement for the game has always been one of its biggest weaknesses but even when the pop has not been large, the game has always had a dedicated & friendly core of players who are dedicated & always willing to help new & old players alike! But, if your coming into the game alone & have no friends in tow it may be hard to find group play at first.

Also, the low-population means theres only two note worthy PvP factions in the game at the moment, but with the 1 year anniversay of the open perpetuum project coming on the 14th along with a big patch & anniversary events, I personally expect the population and conditions to go up a little bit at least.

If your someone who enjoys sci-fi sandbox MMOs that include robots and a dated but still nice looking enviroment, this is the game for you!
If you are someone who enjoys PvP in sandbox games but wants a more balanced & enjoyable system with different bot types to choose from, this game is for you!
If you enjoy producing goods & driving the player market & economy this game is for you!

If you do get it, give the open perpetuum server a look as it is recognized & accepted as the primary server that everyone plays in! https://openperpetuum.com/

See you there Agent!
