The developers nailed the translation from the D&D 5e combat rule set into a game, but boy there are some flaws that annoy me. For instance, if you cast Darkvision on yourself as a human you only get the benefits sometimes, or that the game doesn't explain how to use vertical abilities (such as aligning Fireball or Spider Climb's wall climbing). Speaking of Spider Climb: it's a neat ability that you barely need to use. The situations in which you can apply it can be overcome by simply climbing the up to three squares of movement and you can't walk on balustrades, so forget climbing over that 3' decorative stone after walking 15' vertical wall, you gotta take the long way around it. The same takes effect for jumping. You can jump, let's say a 15' gap (depending on your athletics modifier or generell strenght) in a straight line, but I dare you to try jumping 5' diagonally.

The story of Crown of Magister (base installment of the game) is meh, IMO. Often I just stood there and thought "Alright that was... 'dialog'. Where do I have to go now? Why did they mention my next objective, but not where or what it is exactly?" And when I say 'dialog', I'm talking about the accentuation. Some voice lines are meant to make you feel like you're playing an adeventuring party that's been on the road for quite some time. But since you only really 'see' your party interacting with eachother in a text box when you're on the road to the next location, these interactions often feel forced. Not so much in Lost Valley, though.

As someone who loves RPGs and choice-driven games, it is ironic that I liked Lost Valley more than CotM, since the DLC didn't really have that many choices (at least in conversations) to begin with. CotM warns you in the beginning that the factions matter and that you should be careful whom you give your ressources and better your reputation with, even though it doesn't matter at all. I almost maxed out every faction and non of them felt antagonistic toward me or eachother, unlike in LV. LV actually makes you pick sides, but not clearly. **Spoiler free** At some point someone tells you to attack some fort and change the banner to the respective faction of the quest giver. Doing so subtracts a massive amount of rep from the fought faction, and when you return to the quest giver you immediately get attacked by the fought faction AND the quest giver, who belongs to an entirely different faction, ignoring the rep you got with them, weirdly. Maybe I didn't get the memo that they actually belonged to my enemy, or maybe it's a design oversight. That actually sums it up pretty good, IMO.

All in all, I'd give it a 6/10, simply because of the glorious combat (despite its inconsistencies). If you want a near perfect translation of D&D 5e combat mechanics, then this is the game for you. But if you want a believable narrative with characters you somewhat care about and a good translation of not only combat but roleplay mechanics as well, I recommend Baldur's Gate 3 Early Access.

A very complex and fun game. I can't even count anymore how often I did an all-nighter without any coffein or other drugs, just because I thought "Ah, one more turn" - et voilà; 6 am

Met a nice, bald guy who said there would be treasures beyond my dreams in that pit. I trust him, I mean, a man who says that there're treasures and doesn't take them for himself? What a trusty guy.
