Call of Duty United Offensive is developed by Gray Matter Studios and released in 2004.
It is the expansion to Infinity Ward's first Call Of Duty, released a year earlier.

The immense success of the first COD opus overshadowed the Medal Of Honor series,
which until then had reigned supreme on the throne of WWII FPS.
While a sequel seemed logical, Activision preferred to release an Add-on first.

Like its predecessor, United Offensive features 3 distinct campaigns.

The adventure begins with the American campaign,
during which you play as Corporal Scott Riley.
You'll have to fight hard during the mythical Battle of the Bulge in Belgium.

In the English campaign, Royal Air Force Sergeant James Doyle will assist the Dutch Resistance, in collaboration with the British SAS.
He was also among the first Allied soldiers to take part in the Invasion of Sicily.

Then, in the Russian campaign,
Red Army soldier Yuri Petrenko takes part in the terrible Battle of Kursk,
and survive the siege of Kharkov while awaiting the arrival of Soviet reinforcements.

COD UO is far more intense and brutal than its predecessor.
The staging is way more spectacular, and offers a few moments of anthology.
The action is much more condensed, and the heroic sequences are relentless.
Among the new features that distinguish it from the first Call Of Duty, United Offensive offers:
machine-gun shooting from a military jeep, motorcycles and boats,
and even airborne combat aboard a B-29 Superfortress!

Difficulty has increased significantly since the first episode,
especially if you choose the maximum difficulty setting.
Some missions are no picnic: enemies now respawn indefinitely in some sequences, while others are timed.
the AI has improved, with the Germans firing with incredible accuracy at any distance.

Speaking of weapons,
United Offensive offers some “new” ones compared to the original COD,
including the M1919A6, MG34, Bazooka, Webley MKIV, TT43, SVT40, and even the Flammenwerfer 35!

If Call Of Duty was graphically outdated in 2003,
United Offensive looks ancient compared to the FPS masterpieces released in 2004,
such as Half-Life 2, DOOM 3 and Far Cry.
The engine of the awesome Quake III quickly shows its weaknesses in a game of this scale.

Several names of soldiers encountered in the adventure will return in future COD games.
You play as Private Yuri Petrenko in the Russian campaign,
who is probably related to the Dimitri Petrenko from World At War.
We also meet up with Ramirez and Dunn, who will be key allies in Modern Warfare 2.
I even saw a certain Taylor, who will play an important role in Black Ops III.
Even funnier, there are two soldiers in the same level,
named Gordon and Freeman respectively,
which are obviously a reference to Valve's famous FPS franchise: Half-Life!

Call Of Duty United Offensive is a high-quality add-on.
Less immersive but more action and spectacle oriented, the game is brutal and epic.
If you loved the first COD, there's no doubt you'll enjoy this add-on.
