Trepang2 is a FPS published by Team17 and released in 2023.
The game is largely inspired by F.E.A.R., and pays tribute to its illustrious model.

Subject 106, although endowed with superhuman abilities, is captured by the paramilitary forces of the Horizon Corporation,
and subjected to strange scientific experiments at a site of unknown location.
But one day, when the obscure complex is attacked by a squad from Task Force 27, the latter free him and bring him to join their ranks.
"106" will then seek revenge and discover what the Horizon Corporation is up to.

This spiritual descendant of F.E.A.R. features frenzied gunfights (Gun-Fu),
ultra-violent gore, Bullet Time, the ability to turn invisible,
and a storyline combining strange top-secret scientific research and a sect with a strong occult bent...

Unlike F.E.A.R., Trepang2 is non-linear, with missions that can be played in any order.
Shootouts are no longer just fun and bloody, they're now as hard as they are fast.
You can have a stealth gameplay as well.

The gameplay itself is halfway between F.E.A.R. and Crysis.
Bullet time lets you slow down the action to attack more effectively, but its gauge only recharges if you shoot at enemies.
Invisibility is handy for quickly hiding or eliminating an enemy by surprise, but the duration of its effect is far too short.

Task Force 27 is equipped with a number of weapons, to be used by Subject 106.
Most of them can be used in each hand, in the style of Max Payne or The Punisher.
Among the most noteworthy are:
the SMG Kriss Vector, with its high rate of fire and recoil,
the VHS-D2 assault rifle, furiously reminiscent of the G2A2 from F.E.A.R.,
and above all the SPAS-12, as powerful as the one in Monolith's game.

Each weapon can be customized via specific crates, much like in Battlefield.
You can choose among a lot of skins, scopes or sights, a flashlight or laser sight, a silencer, and even the type of ammunition.
It is very surprising not to be able to use the weapons sight, you can only use the scope.
The uniform is also customizable, and all skins are unlockable as you progress through the game.

Each weapon causes impressive damage to the enemy,
in the style of Killing Floor 2 or DOOM 2016.
A headshot is enough to explode a skull, and dismemberment is commonplace...
You'll be able to unleash your inner violence and smear rooms from floor to ceiling with blood.

The Subject 106 is also capable of melee combat, and can deliver violent rifle butts, jump kicks and tackles.
He can take enemies hostage, use them as human shields, execute them, and throw them at other soldiers with a grenade on them!

Trepang2's AI is very similar to that of F.E.A.R..

Horizon Corporation soldiers are extremely efficient on the battlefield.
They are well designed and communicate a lot with each other.
They're on their toes, and react to noise or flashlight.
Their animations are particularly meticulous.
They come in several variants, the weakest dropping armor when killed, the best armored dropping a healing kit.
They're very reminiscent of F.E.A.R.'s Replicas, although they lack the charisma.
Their behavior, voice and combat tactics are virtually identical.

In addition to soldiers, monstrous anomalies can appear, which must be avoided or fought, again reminiscent of Killing Floor & DOOM 2016.
Totally fanatical cultists, like in F.E.A.R. 3, are to be defeated; they are armed and some charge towards the player with incendiary grenades!

Most levels contain one or more bosses to be exterminated.

Trepang2 blends the occult and science fiction,
all enhanced by detailed graphics,
and a memorable soundtrack.

The game's scenery is numerous and varied.
Some maps are reminiscent of F.E.A.R., such as factories, warehouses and scientific complexes.
But Trepang2 also features a wide variety of settings around the world, including a castle, a military base, an offshore oil rig...

After completing each mission, you'll unlock "cheat codes" that modify the gameplay experience.

Numerous effects enhance the spectacle of the shootouts:
- splendid pyrotechnic and electrical effects,
- beautiful light and shadow effects,
- wild bloodshed...

The game's aesthetic is obviously inspired by F.E.A.R. games, but also by ultra-gory FPS such as Killing Floor 2.
Great care has been taken with the beautiful play of light and shadow.

The game's atmosphere is very well crafted, both graphically and in terms of sound design.

Weapon sounds are realistic, as are the voices and sound effects.
The music is very enjoyable, mixing metal and electro.
They would be perfect for a Killing Floor or a modern DOOM.

Additional modes are available to extend the game's lifespan.
These include a Horde mode, a Survival mode and even a Sandbox mode.
You can even customize the soldiers you face, for a personalized experience.
The game also has great replayability, you will unlock rewards depending on the missions and their chosen difficulty.

While I insist that Trepang2 has a lot in common with F.E.A.R., there are several major differences with its glorious model.
Trepang2's plot is terribly laconic, anecdotal and poorly written, so it's not really memorable,
which is a pity for those like me who love exciting plots.
Indeed, the script quickly loses credibility due to a number of unwelcome plot elements that I don't intend to dwell on.
The once linear progression is replaced by missions in any order, with little coherence between them.
Levels quickly become repetitive, as most missions follow the same pattern.
Only a few of them are linear and quite similar to F.E.A.R..
The soldiers spawn wave after wave, making combat predictable, severely repetitive, sometimes long and annoying.
They spawn grenades so much that it's sometimes almost a nightmare to play.

Trepang2 is a spectacular FPS, a real release of the kind you hardly ever see these days.
However, its many small flaws would benefit from being corrected, in order to perfect it further.
It's a brutal game that makes me look forward to F.E.A.R.'s return to the limelight...
