After the disaster that was Dynasty Warriors 9, Koei Tecmo took Origins in a bold new direction while retaining that classic 1 vs 1000 gameplay. Morale plays a much more prominent role in the battles of Origins than they do in past entries, and there's also now some RPG elements. This is clearly not the Dynasty Warriors we knew. This is Dynasty Warriors reinvented as a hack-n-slash RPG game. The RPG grind is there, and you'll definitely find yourself grinding skirmishes to level up and build up your skill tree.

It feels weird thinking of Dynasty Warriors as a RPG game, but Koei Tecmo managed to blend it perfectly with the classic 1 vs 1000 formula the Warriors series is known for. The massive character roster we've all known and love are now prominent NPCs in a RPG game. The game's story is basically a story within a story - the Wanderer's journey plays out alongside the events of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Requires Epic Game Store account to even be able to play online. Until the devs remove this requirement, this review will stay NEGATIVE.

well, so much for this game winning Game of the Year 2024

First and foremost, for the people expecting this to be a story-based RPG just like Pokemon, this game is not it. This game, at its core, is a survival game first, with Pokemon splashed in.

That said, Game Freak, please take note. This is how you do an open world Pokemon game. This game is only in Early Access and its still way better optimized than Scarlet and Violet.

There's a nice balance between grip and drift styles now compared to the drift heavy meta of Heat. HOWEVER, single and multiplayer progression is split. It means the game is far more grindy now unless you're doing one of those money making glitches where you get a dozen copies of the same car in your garage (what is this, GTA Online?).

Personally speaking, the shared progression system in Heat was a lot better.

If they gave us the new physics and gameplay mechanics of Unbound with the progression of Heat, we could've had the perfect NFS game. But because of the grindy nature of Unbound created by the split progression system, I have to recommend Heat over Unbound.
