ÝDALIR


It is nestled high in the mountains

Built of antlers, surrounded by evergreen,

Ski-marks swirl in spirals between.



Skulls of beasts in branches hung,

Each a kill far clean and fine,

In blank eyeholes icicles shine.



The ice-crust breaks beneath my step

As I approach, the branches brush me,

And all his laughter seems to touch me.



Hail the flashing Lord of Ydalir,

Swift as wind upon the snow,

Mountain-high, he blesses us below.

Let the funeral pyres
Lick the sky with higher fires
Sending those we love
To up above
Under the banner
Of crimson valor
They fly on the wings of Valkyrie
Chosen for burdens they carry
From wars they have won
As Odin's daughter and son
Welcomed to the great hall
As proud warriors. Skål

The Boat

My teeth are ragged,
Cracking and brown.
My eyes are dark,
A glower. Unmoving.
I rear my great, lithesome neck,
Only to pitch back down.

Two dozen wings,
Beating exactly in time,
With the perpetual thumping
Of this heart of mine.
The furrows of my belly show
As I begin to climb.

Billowing cold flames,
They mingle with rain.
I watch woodenly
As They stake their claim:
The Vikings that came from the sea;
The Vikings that came from me.


The Norsemen

Absent
their future
black like coal
starker and darker
than the claws of Sköll

Together in a line
stand the Norsemen

nerves steeled like their axes

pride
forging rings
forging kinship
forging mesh

like the links of lambent chainmail
draped over their chieftain

skin so algid
the snow stiffens
to lend its warmth to them

Today
they will prove themselves
gods to men
and gods of men
to gods

Today
their swords and axes
will drink blood by the tankards
as they bite through helmets
and gnash through bone

Today
Odin will smile
and kinsmen will cry
Today is the day that these Norsemen die.
