The dispenser goes "Whoops, That was not medicine"

I came across a KGB interrogation technique - actually, it is a method of extreme torture devised by the KGB involving heroin and a platypus (yes the same platypus which is the only egg laying mammal) that tops anything else I have ever heard of regarding pain. Curious where this is going? Read on.

The first step was to keep the prisoner on continual and escalating high doses of heroin (or any other comparably strong opioid) for about ten days. During this period, some significant neurochemical changes are occurring, as the prisoner's μ opioid receptors downregulate so dramatically that the body's endogenous opioid system becomes totally reliant on the presence of heroin (or another strong μ opioid agonist) to function. At the end of the ten days, the prisoner is abruptly cut off of the heroin, which within 36 hours results in a state of abject misery characterized by chronic nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, severe muscular “phantom pains”, anxiety, confusion, despair, and crucially, a total lack of resistance to any form of pain. While in this state, even the mildest of injuries such as a flick can be excruciating, a fact that the KGB apparently capitalized on using something from seemingly one of the unlikeliest of sources— a platypus.

It turns out that during mating season, the crural glands of male platypuses produce a venom that even in relatively small amounts induces pain that is immediate, long-lasting, and absolutely excruciating as your muscles begin to break down like they are being devoured by thousands of microscopic carnivorious insects— in reality, by an influx of protein-based neurotoxins— but the analogy isn't that far off.

Now the KGB wasn't known for their moderation, and this particular horror story is no exception. The prisoner would be injected with repeated, concentrated doses of the platypus venom until the KGB was satisfied that they had extracted whatever information they needed to. This would certainly be excruciating under normal circumstances, but in the midst of severe acute opioid withdrawal when pain is magnified by orders of magnitude… it would be unimaginable.
