Surpisingly fun. It's hard but the neat imagery makes it less of a rage than a platformer like Mario. Plus, it's only $2USD, and it goes on sale fairly often. I'd pick it up. I got it as a random key but I'm glad I did!

Please don't get this. I only played a few minutes because I couldn't bear it. Super cheesy, terrible graphics (especially for a 2015 game!), and boring gameplay. It's like Temple Run or Minion Rush but broken.

Early Access Review
Wow. The Long Dark.

First off, I must say that this game isn't for everyone. With Story Mode unavailable in Alpha, a death means instant restart. This can be frustrating, especially when fighting wolves (I can't for the life of me figure out a good way to do this, especially when I can't find a knife). And if you want an FPS style survival, that's not this game. It's first person, but the only gun, a slow firing hunters rifle, is extremely rare; I've only found it twice.

That being said, I didn't expect to love this game. I generally play FPS or action games like Destiny, Call of Duty, and Assassin's Creed. I actually saw this game in Game Informer magazine and it just looked really interesting. Regardless, I do love this game. I don't have a lot of Steam games (I play Xbox One mostly) but this is by far my favorite one.

So what's so great about this game? Well, like I said before, it is pretty frustrating. This means that when you get some decent gear, properly time your actions, and start exploring strong- it feels very rewarding. Also, there are only five other mammals you run into. These are dead humans, wolves, bears (I've not yet seen one), and rabbits. There is also ice fishing. Having just a few AI means a quiet and calm feeling of isolation, even though I play on Voyageur mode (normal) not Pilgrim (easy/peaceful). The beautiful isolation combined with the slightly cartoonish graphics and landscape make for a stunning game. I play on Low graphics and it still looks beautiful; my only problem is black lighting indoors, which is my laptops fault.

Get this game. If you want to wait to get it on sale, sure. I waited a couple weeks and got it at $12 instead of $20, but that was recently so it might not go on sale again for a while. Regardless, it is definitely worth $20 USD. Get it if you can handle the quirks I mentioned in the beginning.
