Everything about this game is worse than the original, aside from the graphics.

For the first launch-day PC release "Tales of" game, this definitely did not disappoint. The combat was decent, the plot was solid (for the most part), and the skits were great. The skits were often very funny, and as a guy who appreciates humor, I liked that. Most of the characters were decent, but there were a few that really annoyed me. The soundtrack has very good, and I didn't encounter any bugs or glitches in my (very long) play through.

The only downside to me was that it was a smidge too grindy, and I wasn't a fan of the ending of the game. I didn't really like the route they took with the ending, but that's just my personal opinion. It does not detract from the enjoyment I had playing the game. The grind, though, was pretty real. It wasn't truly necessary to grind for the main game, but you needed to do it for end-game content. And that can take a while. I had pre-ordered the Ultimate edition of the game, so I was able to reduce this with some of the DLC content that makes the grind not so bad, but without that the (already long) grind would have been way worse.

Either way, it's a pretty solid game. I would suggest it to people who are a fan of JRPGS, and especially fans of prior "Tales of" games.

This brings all of the enjoyment of Halo to PC. My only (current) complaint is that there is no split-screen co-op.

This review has been edited. I have also switched from recommending this game to not recommending this game, and then back to recommending this game. See the bottom section for my update on 9/5/2019 and my other update on 11/27/2019.

Pros:
-Higher Resolution Models
-Controller Icon Prompts
-Chocobo World has been removed and Chocobo World items can now be obtained in-game with Rinoa's Angelo Search ability
-Better PC options such as anti-aliasing, borderless windowed, etcetera
-PSX audio versus the OGG files that were up-converted from the crappy MIDI audio of the 2000 PC port
-Minor bug fixes

Cons:
-Backgrounds were not touched up
-The game was not remastered for widescreen (which makes sense as backgrounds weren't touched, but it's still disappointing)
-The Triple Triad screen seems a bit washed out

That's my first impression. I love the game itself. That makes up for the quick cash-grab from SquareEnix. I would still recommend this game over the 2013 version as I suspect that there will be more/better mod support for this game in the future versus the 2013 version.

Update (9/5/2019) - It seems the modding community won't be able to do as much with this version of the game as the pre-rendered backgrounds are not easily accessible for them to touch this up. It's still *possible* that mod support can make this game look better, but at this time it seems unlikely. I would still recommend this game if you have no desire to mod a game to make it look better. Other than that, the 2013 version is the recommend version at this time. If mod support turns around in the future I will update this review again.

Update (11/27/2019) - There have been a few graphical mods that have come out to make this game look better. Backgrounds are still atrocious, but I've moved back to recommending this game again.

Epic game. Love the junction system. I'm not a fan of Irvine or Selphie. Other than that, awesome.
