This is one of the games that steam is forcing the use of joystick/hotas unless unplugged. Developer need to push steam to undo this. Had been playing with keyboard and mouse with joystick plugged in with no problems, before some recent update of steam. I have never genuinely recommend any game as much as this one at early access bargain. Mods are already out even at this stage.
