short answer, if you wish Doom 2016 had dashing and was a rhythm game? this is your game. but you gotta pick a favorite pair of guns

the closest comparison i can make is not Bullets per Minute, but rather Doom(2016) with some QoL updates that Eternal added.

you got your Glory Kills which refill health, ammo is infinite but magazines are not. the reload-to-the-beat system is exactly like BPM.

unlike Doom, you are only allowed to bring 2 guns and your two canonical story weapons, Paz(read: pistol) and Terminus(sickle sword).

as a mechanic and gameplay balance tool, i don't entirely mind this limitation, however the best part about Doom was using either the right gun for the monster, or switching for combo attacks.
if i could change anything about hellsinger, i would give each demon its own more obvious weaknesses and strengths(more than they already have) and allow full weapon wheel swapping.

in all, it can serve to really fuel your inner doomguy rampage with the music being specifically composed and divided into separate cooperating tracks. each combo multiplier you reach toggles/fades in the next track layer, leaving a softer melodic metal on low skill or low combo, and full lyrical rage on 16x combo.

Early Access Review
0/10, can't put chemicals in the water to turn the fricken frogs gay.

conflicted feelings. game seems good in every system and concept, but each system feels disconnected from the rest and janky.

also poorly optimised, melee for example is not click to attack, it's click and hold to attack, much like most mining/logging actions in these types of games.

i have little faith in "early access" titles actually making use of their early access status to drastically change or improve the game. this one desperately needs some more time in the oven, but i can see and feel great potential.

for what it's worth, i can't stop myself from playing this so it's probably a good game?

I don't think I spent more than an hour away from the game, so almost all 15 hours I've played, were spent in the game. I did not sleep between starting and finishing the game. This was the most memorable 15 hours I've had in quite some time, and from such a small game. Well worth the price. Lovely art, adorable voice blips, and so much fishing.

it was a mediocre enough game before, definitely had issues as was memed to death. nail in the coffin for the steam client is their making origin obsolete. if launched via steam through EA Games' self titled app, it would crash and refuse to launch directly through the app meaning you had to use Steam. the solution to the error was to open Origin so the game would force itself to load through that when launched through Steam. thankfully i've only wasted about 11 CAD on this due to a nice discount sale last summer. if you want to buy, i recommend going through EA directly, or better yet not at all. if you liked ME1-3, this really isn't up to snuff.

substantial improvement and QoL changes over My Time at Portia. would love to see where this game goes.

Do I recommend My Time at Sandrock? Short answer, yes.

I once recommended Portia to a friend after receiving it for free on Epic Games' monthly freebies. She told me she didn't like it once before, though had to do with it being single player. She saw me playing it for weeks before I realized the Epic Games client was not updated, while the steam client was. I then noticed Pathea's history with Planet Explorers and was a little cautious, but impressed with Portia so far I decided to buy the steam client at full price. I do not regret that purchase.

After months of avoiding other games I used to play with friends, that friend from earlier decided to try Portia out. She spent weeks on the game, and started whining and moaning whenever we tried to pull HER away from Portia. Neither of us completed Portia before Sandrock released. We purchased Sandrock almost immediately following release and have not been disappointed.

All my hours on sandrock were from within the first couple weeks of release. After having beat the Alpha "story so far" I felt less and less reason to return, but I've been patiently waiting updates to the story, the commissions, and the world and characters. We're still firmly waiting for multiplayer to release, but we've long since accepted that the My Time series is best at home as a single player Builder/Contractor experience.

I've recently been diagnosed with autism and ADHD, and after watching a few short videos on it I'm hardly an expert but I can see the psychology used to drive the player in sandrock. There's a lot of thought given to making the systems in the game fun, often manipulatively so. If this was an EA or Ubisoft game, or worse, a korean MMORPG, these systems would be exploited horribly to give the player the worst experience unless they did not pay. Instead, these psychological tricks and treats are used for good to make the game more fun, not less.

Every resource you find, you'll find yourself wanting to collect more and again. Every character you meet, you'll feel good offering gifts, taking on playdates/dates, or talking to/interacting with. Every day you start, you will feel you have something to do, or need a break from having too much to do. Those "break" days are crucial for farming extra resources you otherwise don't need(yet).

The Daily Commissions board gives the game much needed friendship points, and daily/weekly tasks you can complete for money and relationships. The Commerce guild acting as if this was a PvP game, in an otherwise single player game, gives you a sense of competition and reward for every job you do and person you help.

I look forward to Sandrockin' it all day long.
