While the expansion contains some mechanics that would fit easily in the main game, it is still worth playing without it. Modded game play will probably never recover to the heights of 1.0/1.1, but most of the larger mod packs are already updating themselves for 2.0
Beware, there's no filter for "Does not require expansion" yet on the mod portal, so you have got to pay attention to the mod's requirements and make sure it does not include "space-age" or "quality"

Terrible launch, riddled with even worse management of the issues that arose. I can't recommend it at all in its current incarnation, and I have no hopes that it'll get better going forward.

On the other hand, it could use less grind

Causes severe issues to my system, to the point that my video drivers and my steam installation got damaged and had to be cleanly reinstalled and repaired respectively.
Cannot recommend.
