Now in 1976, while I was working at the university of ********, I took a small group of young radicals from Students for a Democratic Society to Cambodia, to meet with Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge, to study the rapid democratization of Cambodian society, during their ambitious program to achieve communism without interstitial steps.And of course, what we saw was some truly revolutionary activity. We saw the evacuation of surplus urban population to communal farms,to increase agricultural production.We saw the amazing complete abolition of currency, in favour of a rice based barter system. We saw humane reeducation of elites, and we saw compassionate treatment of minority populations. Now, 3 of our group were executed for revisionism during the trip, one of whom was doused in gasoline and thrown on a heap of flaming skulls while we were forced to watch at gunpoint, and another 5 were imprisoned at Tuol Sleng.
