The Square and the Tower opens with an introductory section addressing the properties of networks and thenfollows with some 50 short chapters that serve as case studies. Many of these studies are fascinating and, together,they show Ferguson's mastery of a wide array of economic, political, and social matters. Along the way he clarifiessome of the similarities and differences that existed between: the organizational charts of Joseph Stalin's Sovietscience and Alfred Sloan's General Motors; the ego networks of Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger; the center‐periphery gradients for the Bloomsbury Group and the 9/11 plotters; and the connectivity properties for eitherprominent individuals (James Watt) or well‐known institutions (German universities). One especially fascinatingchapter examines the key positioning of Paul Revere, a Freemason, in the revolutionary network of Boston c. 1775.
