And what would be wrong with increasing the size of text? I already do it myself, it wouldn't be that hard.

I thought that as well.
Unfortunately it doesn't work that way.
I just tried manually changing the font size for friend chat in steam.
The emoticons stayed the same size. They're stuck at that size.

hhnnnngngngnnn, img tags are not affected by font size property. Not in CSS3

They can easily make a higher resolution/larger emoticon size optional, which would quickly put the problem to rest. With the sheer number of icons that are going to come out/are already out and at the small resolution they're at, there's only so much you can do to make a practical (and thereby simple) set of emoticons differentiable from the rest.

So to the matter at hand, I previously opened my emoticon list and saw , which I had neither realized I had nor seen before. I wasn't able to tell what it was until I moused over it. And before anyone tries to accuse me of this, my hardware doesn't suck, my eyes are fine, I'm not stupid, I'm not intoxicated, and I don't need to get a better computer.
