Can't play music
OS: Windows 7

Issues: Music doesn't play

Steps:
Added music regularly from music folder
Can scroll through tracks, though not really sorted by album when sorted by album
Play a song (multiple tested)
No music
Also one time the now playing/system menu would just immeidately go away whenever called until big picture was turned off.

If you have multiple sound cards (GPU's with HDMI count as sound cards for this) check in system settings which one is set as default. For now Steam Music uses only default device for playback. That means it might be playing music through something that's not plugged in.

Ayup, there's the problem. Guess it looks at the device used for voice chat and sends the music to there. Guess for the time being i just have to disconnect my mic when i want to use music.

Or change default device in system settings.
We will address the issue in a future update.

If you mean default as in stated by windows, then the default speakers should be the speakers I intend to use, not the mic when it is plugged in. Could be Steam or Windows messing things up, but as long as we have the mod's acknowledgement that this will be adressed soon, then there's nothing to worry about

In Windows (at least Win 7) sound settings, Playback tab you have a list of all sound devices. There you can set two options:
- "Default device" which should be used by most programs for audio playback
- "Default communication device" which should be used by communication programs (VoIP, ect.)

These options are represented by green icons on the device list. They usually are set to the same device, but you can change them manually. Also Windows can sometimes automatically switch the communication device depending on what's plugged in.

For some reason, while Steam client/Big Picture overlay are using "Default device" for playback, Steam Music is using "Default communication device". If you get no sound while playing music, check Windows sound settings and set those options properly.

Of course this should be fixed soon.

Digging up this old thread. I had the same issue, Changing Audio devices worked for me. As such, looks like its not fixed yet :)

I come from the future to tell you that it is 2024 and the sound is still not coming out!
Crazy that the bug is still present after a first report in 2014, which is already 10 years ago!
To top it off, it's impossible to contact Steam support directly on the subject...
I know that it comes from their application since I have the same problem on several soundtracks and I only encounter this music playback problem with them...

While it is true that Valve have been negligent with the music player and given it very little support in recent years (with the only notable 'update' being to remove all of its customisability) in this instance I do not think it is fair to say that they have left this bug in for 10 years. Considering that the original bug report here is really vague and boils down to "Music doesn't play" with no clear indication of what was causing the problem until a few comments later, it is reasonably likely that this particular bug causing this vague issue was fixed but the symptom of music failing to play is also caused by another bug, most likely emerging after the previous one was dealt with.
