Unfortunately, Steam does not provide any function to group administrators that allows notifications to be suppressed when events are posted (among other things).

We're often reaching out to Valve to ask them to give group organisers (and members) better ways of controlling notifications. You can be certain that if we had the ability to prevent the stack of notifications you received, you wouldn't be seeing them.

Valve really needs to get on fixing the community features of steam. There's a bunch of things missing from steam for the things they are trying to do and is leading to an all around mediocre experience.

I still love steam, just dissapointed that valve hasn't upgraded some things that are very much in need of upgrades!

It doesn't help that the way notification toasts seem to have changed. Previously, it'd stack up to five and then you wouldn't see the rest (and it'd be over in the time it'd take for the first ones to disappear). Now it queues them up and you get to see them all :/

I'm not certain. This is the first time I've seen it work like this - it didn't happen last month.

When playing not steam games, this kills my gameplay and also fills up 10 or so slots by the time I get back to my computer from work. I really dont' want to leave the group, but it's just getting too much.

The behaviour you're seeing doesn't seem like the normal behaviour for the Steam client. You shouldn't get more than one event notification a day unless it's a SteamLUG Cast day (in which case there'd be two).

In a normal week, we'd have four events total. If you're seeing more notifications than that, then something isn't right.

When events are scheduled, a "toast notification" (the kind that goes away on its own after two seconds) is created. There's nothing we can do about that unfortunately. If those hang around and don't go away, then that sounds like a bug too.

I did hear from someone a while ago who said they got multiple notifications every day, including days that we didn't have any events. After leaving the group, they said they were still receiving them, so it sounds like maybe there's a state that the client or a user's Steam account can get in that makes notifications more annoying than they're meant to be. If you're in a similar situation, I'd be keen to know about it.

As a workaround, you could create another group just to send notifications, e.g. lug_notifications. Everyone who is interested in receiving your spam would also join that new group to get pop-ups for all your events and the other members will remain undisturbed.

I refuse to believe that this change would affect your participation rate, since everyone who actually cares about your notifications will read the announcement and click the subscribe button.

That's definitely an option and one that's been suggested before. I'm wary of fragmentation/discovery issues (doing regular content-less "We have this other group!" announcements feels like it'd be more annoying for people who don't want to see Steam notifications?), and as a workaround, it's also awkward in that there's no nice way to bring everything back together once things are resolved (it seems like the only option available would be to disband the secondary group and risk losing people).

There's still the issue of whatever Steam bug it is that has caused some people to receive more notifications than we make. Shying away isn't going to help us get that problem resolved.

I guess the other key thing to note is that the pre-Steam for Linux incarnation of this group is gone. There's no longer a need for a less-active petition group aimed at getting Valve to notice Linux users (or if there is, that's no longer a role we're targeting). That said, I'm definitely keen to a see an outcome where Linux users can have a pleasant experience in this group regardless of how involved they choose to be.
