Does 'household' mean 'physically in the same house'?
I didn't originally take it to mean this - I thought it just meant same family. But when my dad tried to accept my invite, he got "your steam activity doesn't indicate that you are in the same household".

This probably should be clarified in the rules, and it probably also renders the whole feature almost entirely useless. How many families have all of their members living in the same building? I don't even live in the same country as the people (dad and sister) I intended to share with. I can share with my wife I guess, but what's the use of that when she's physically in the same house and can just use my account if she wants.

That is correct. This is for people living together so all of them can use the games from one library at the same time under the same roof. At last my wife and me can play games from my library at the same time.

People keep trying ways of avoiding the restrictions and then they got surprised when Valve restrict it even more.

Because it is against ToS for your wife to just use your account. The entire idea is that it works similarly to how old disks would work. You want to play a game that someone in your household bought? You ask them to hand it to you if they aren't using it.
Yeah I am in the same boat. I am active duty military so I move all the time and I thought this would be a cool way to share games with my mom, but she receives the same error. While this means I can still share with my husband (he gets the better end of this deal XD) I do wish that the Steam Families description would at least make the household restriction more apparent.
this makes it unfunctional as im concerned whats the point of having an INTERNET if you need to be in the same house -)
its called a LAN PARTY! for a reason
so that makes this a bureaucratic "#FAMILYLAN"
Sure Steam gets to DRM easier but families are FAR more Diverse than Steam is making out?
#AINTBROKEDONTFIX

and lets not even start with a malicious sibling in the same house who can EASILY get another sibling banned from the original owners favourite game you #STEAM you HAVE to BE KIDDING!!

This sucks. Mi sister is my only family member that plays games and she is living in Spain currently... And I'm not...

Wanted to open a new topic but apparently this issue has already been highlighted multiple times.

Waiting for my brother to come over and we'll try to set it up again, but from reading some of the user experiences even being connected to the same router might still not be enough. Wish they'd really clarify what the requirement really is.

If it's something like '>80% account activity logged under the same IP in the past year' then it's a useless feature to me since we don't really live together in the same house to be eligible for that criteria.

I agree that we need more flexibility.
I'd like to share my library with my grandson who lives about a mile away. We don't have enough disposable income to duplicate the games he's seen me play.
won't even let me share with my sister living in the same apartment building but a different unit. 30 second walk, don't even have to go outside. completely useless.
What about part time in the same household? I live with my family in the same home but take my laptop to work. Can I still play on it and when returning home have the family account? Or will it be cancelled because I accessed it from work?

Once you are IN the family it does no matter. Its just the initial joining that is such a pain in the butt.

Same here. I was hoping to share some games with my brother. But yeah, it really is limited to household. I hope they change it.

When I set up this family group, out of all friends, only my brother popped up as a suggestion to invite.
So it's not "Family" sharing, it's "Household" sharing.

How exactly is this an upgrade?

1. Families can live in different households.

2. Family isn't always blood.

3. Insert Dominic Toretto meme.
