Why am I running Steam Bootstrapper?
This is getting me extremely paranoid. I have been trying to do malware and spyware scans for the last few days because I believe I may have something, and now all the sudden Steam is showing up as Steam Client Bootstrapper (buildbot_winslave04_steam_steam_rel_client_win32@winslave04) and this is not helping my paranoia. I have never even signed up for any beta on Steam at all, so why am I getting this? I am still getting it after 2 fresh installs, one I redownloaded while logged in, the other one I redownloaded after logging out - and still. Is valve doing a Beta for everyone right now, because I have a friend that also has this. If it is beta, then why is it not called beta? Pretty coincidental that the moment I am doing extensive virus and malware searching and scanning, steam is called "Bootstrapper" not a very attractive name - and very misleading to someone like me that likes things to be shown exactly what they are.

This group was for testing an update to the Steam bootstrapper. The beta test ended a while ago and those updates went live just today with Steam's client update. But Steam has always had a bootstrapper and viewing the process in Task Manager or PE would have always shown the description for steam.exe as exactly what you posted up there. It's nothing to worry about. You've just not noticed it all this time.

Oh, and there isn't any current beta that I can see as the one that had been ongoing went live today. The description of "Steam Client Bootstrapper (buildbot_winslave04_steam_steam_rel_client_win32@winslave04)" doesn't say beta anywhere either so I'm not sure why you're under the assumption that you're using the beta client. In fact, it includes "rel_client" as in "release client" as in "production client".

Don't worry, we all see what you're seeing.

I did not assume I was running a beta, I was asking if I was and if I was why it was not called Beta. Thank you, though. I did not realize rel_client meant release client, and I have no idea why I have never seen that in there before. But, the thing that really made me think I was running a different version was that when it was updating it will run the same "Updating" box that it usually does, and then it will close and open a completely white update box - and that right there had me puzzled. But, anyway, cool...
Holy shit you're paranoid lol. Chill bro, its all good.

Was a beta, but has since been shipped officially within the past month roughly.

With good reason.

That new white box you see was one of the changes made to the bootstrapper, so it's good that you noticed the change and are aware of how Steam would normally work versus how it's working since today's update. But going forward, when you get Steam client updates you'll be seeing the update process this new way as Steam restarts itself.

If only more people could be that aware of how the programs on their systems worked...
I try and make sure to notice even small changes like that. I just find it so funny that it just happened to coincide with my malware and spyware search, but I am extremely glad it was not any type of malware. And because of that, I have now deduced that I have no malware or spyware - so yay me!
