Might be able to if you can make the human enemies associate you as an enemy, meaning the modder would probably have to set the AI's faction to zombie or a whole new one. Information on factions is available on the CryDev docs, however the information is setup to be the new updated engine: http://docs.cryengine.com/display/SDKDOC4/Factions

Cover mechanic may be a little more difficult though.

What do you mean exactly by half shit to complete shit?

the config mod should still work, but there may be some changes that Undead Labs did that I haven't done yet.

_ddn's typically are the normal map textures, I have no idea why you wouldn't be able to open them.

I don't think Milkshape alone will get you far, but you can probably use it to model and probably export it into a format 3dsmax can read. (OBJ, FBX, etc.)

One can hope. For now you can actually do a lot of stuff without the editor itself.

Not easier, just better for compatibility.

There is some base code in the engine by default that would allow for some fairly basic multiplayer. Only problem is getting the AI to properly sync over the network.

I'm never going to say it's impossible, I would just say I would wait until full release to really start working on the mod.

The only folders I recommend copying are Characters, Objects, Textures. If you by accident downloaded the latest 3.5.3 you may run into compatibility issues as they've changed a lot about the animation system and virtually everything else gamecode wise.

It supports DX9, it'll run better and it just makes more sense to do it.
