Editing FOV - any thoughts?

I've been messing around with trying to get a new FOV to take, unsuccessfully so far. my first thought was to get the dev console to display, and get cl_fov to hopefully take there. I was able to get the console to display on startup, but can't type in it.

I also tried applying the cl_fov command to various files such as autoexec.cfg and other various cfg files with no luck :(

Any ideas on what I could try? Or maybe this is locked out...

this issue is somewhat tangentially related to the issues facing Eyefinity users. It might be a good idea to keep an eye on forum threads discussing fixes for Eyefinity, since correcting the FOV is usually a big part of fixing those issues.

If this can't be done with a config file or console vars, it could probably be done with a memory hack. If the HUD can be fixed, I'd be willing to give it a whirl.
