When the official forums come back up then I can point you to a do-it-yourself mod for some things, made by Smashly. Other than that I would say the only easy way is editing the files you want to change if it is something basic like changing character skins or messing with a few variables.

Thats what I want to do eventually, at this point I'd settle for just a basic guide first telling me precisely what tools I need and how to get to the point that I can begin looking for the stuff I want to change. :p Sorry for the complete newb question. Starting to get burned out on the vanilla stuff so I wanted to change it up a bit to my own tastes for my next run.
